What is the difference between Integration Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectIntegration EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications like Cisco, AWS may helpBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; coding certifications optional
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with IT, network teams, and clients to implement integrationsWorks primarily on coding, designing, and testing software applications
Industry UsageCommon in tech, healthcare, finance for system integrationsWidespread across all software development sectors
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for technical skills and project scopeCompared for coding skills and software design expertise

The main difference is that Integration Engineers focus on connecting and configuring systems and software to work together seamlessly, often involving network and hardware components. Software Developers primarily design, code, and test software applications. Both roles require technical skills, but Integration Engineers emphasize system integration and interoperability, while Software Developers focus on creating software solutions.

Job description

The Integrations Team is responsible for building the ETL pipelines, and data integrations which power Parsec's analysis tools. This process includes innovative techniques for pulling, formatting, structuring, and testing data for integrity.

We are looking for candidates with a proven track record of delivering software solutions that solve critical business needs. The candidate should be able to refine ambiguous problem spaces into concrete technical requirements, and implement technical solutions satisfying those requirements. They should be able to take ownership of an application, project, or feature and drive it from design to implementation.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead large projects from inception to execution, architecting systems and agentic workflows that support complex data workflows and large-scale integrations.
  • Drive technology decisions and shape the overall platform architecture and roadmap, including agentic system design patterns like tool orchestration, context management, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and reliability strategies for non-deterministic workflows.
  • Design and implement agentic pipelines that take a first pass on as much engineering work as possible (code, ETL, testing, documentation) while ensuring the resulting output is structured for efficient human validation downstream.
  • Implement advanced solutions in Go, Python, and TypeScript, ensuring best practices for security, performance, and maintainability, including LLM integration, prompt management, and evaluation harnesses for AI-assisted features.
  • Oversee and improve cloud infrastructure (preferably GCP) and container orchestration strategies (Kubernetes), integrating advanced data technologies like BigQuery when applicable including async execution patterns, observability tooling, and cost management for AI API consumption at scale.
  • Mentor Level I and Level II Software Engineers, championing dynamic and innovative development workflows, high standards of quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Own the evaluation and governance of AI tools entering the engineering workflow, assessing reliability, security posture, data handling, and vendor risk before team-wide rollout.
  • Define and maintain standards for AI-assisted code review, documentation, and testing, including where AI output requires human sign-off and where it can be trusted autonomously.
Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with demonstrated ownership of production systems at scale.
  • Advanced proficiency in Go, Python, and TypeScript, with strong command of software design patterns and API development.
  • Deep experience with cloud infrastructure (preferably GCP) and container orchestration (Kubernetes), including cost management and observability.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering complex, multi-system integrations and data workflows.
  • Proven track record of leading projects end-to-end and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Hands-on experience with LLM integration, agentic tooling, or AI-assisted development workflows including evaluation, prompt management, and responsible rollout.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to drive alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong security and compliance instincts, with experience assessing vendor and tooling risk in regulated or sensitive data environments.
  • Experience working in K-12 education or a mission-driven organization is preferred but not required.
Requirements:
  • Experience working in software development.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with team members.
  • Understanding and strong ability to utilize AI workflows.
  • Work on-site in our Fresno, CA office.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis and must not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Benefits:
  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options
  • In addition to 14 observed holidays, team members have unlimited paid time off
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Employer Paid Life Insurance
  • Competitive Bonus Structure
  • Awesome Collaborative Office Space located in Downtown Fresno
