What is an insurance data engineer?

Insurance Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems that support the needs of insurance companies. They are responsible for collecting, organizing, and processing large amounts of data from various sources to enable accurate risk assessment, pricing, claims analysis, and regulatory compliance. Their work helps insurers make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences by leveraging modern data technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and a solid understanding of insurance data structures, typically supported by a degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with SQL, Python, big data platforms (like Hadoop or Spark), and experience with cloud data solutions such as AWS or Azure are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge technical and business needs while ensuring data quality. • Partner with Product, Architecture, Analytics, Engineering, Operations, and Customer Success teams to translate customer and business challenges into production of AI solutions.
  • Define AI product requirements, solution patterns, success metrics, release readiness criteria, and adoption measures aligned with GMT's technology roadmap.
  • Develop reusable AI engineering patterns for prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, model evaluation, monitoring, observability, and secure integrations.
  • Establish quality, governance, security, and responsible AI practices that ensure trust, transparency, and scalability of AI solutions.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams and external partners to deliver secure, explainable, and supportable AI products.
  • Drive customer self-service and time-to-insight improvements through natural language experiences and AI-enabled analytics capabilities.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and recommend practical adoption paths that create measurable customer and business value.
  • Help define product impact measurements including adoption, usage, trust, productivity improvements, and value realization.
  • Provide technical mentoring and leadership to engineers working on AI-enabled products and platform capabilities.

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience designing and delivering enterprise applications.
  • Experience developing and deploying AI-powered applications into production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with generative AI technologies, including Azure OpenAI and related AI platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise software architecture, API-first design, cloud-native solutions, security, privacy, model evaluation, and responsible AI principles.
  • Experience with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt engineering, embeddings, vector stores, and AI orchestration patterns.
  • Development experience with Python and/or .NET.
  • Strong ability to translate customer challenges into product requirements, technical solutions, engineering designs, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, facilitation, and technical documentation skills.
  • Experience bringing AI concepts, pilots, or proofs of concept into production-ready products.
  • Experience partnering with product managers, architects, data engineers, analytics teams, business stakeholders, and vendor delivery partners.
  • Experience with Semantic Kernel, LangGraph, LangChain, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI Copilot, or similar AI and analytics platforms is preferred.
  • Experience building customer-facing AI products or AI-enabled software capabilities is preferred.
  • Knowledge of transportation, logistics, supply chain, analytics, or data products is preferred.
