Role Summary

The Land Survey Party Chief leads field survey crews at SSR, directing the collection of land, boundary, topographic, construction, and infrastructure data across a variety of project types. This role ensures surveys are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, legal standards, and applicable regulations. The Party Chief serves as the primary point of accountability in the field – coordinating with project managers, engineers, and clients while upholding SSR’s commitment to quality and safety.

What You’ll Do

Lead and coordinate field survey crews across a range of project types, ensuring precision, safety, and delivery in every assignment.

  • Supervise crew members during daily field operations, providing direction, mentorship, and quality oversight
  • Execute boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, route, and as-built surveys
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain survey equipment including total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, levels, and data collectors
  • Interpret engineering plans, deeds, plats, and legal descriptions to guide field activities
  • Set and verify survey monuments, hubs, stakes, and control points with a high degree of accuracy
  • Coordinate field activities with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to meet project schedules
  • Prepare accurate daily field notes, sketches, reports, and documentation for project records
  • Review collected data for completeness and accuracy, troubleshooting field issues as they arise
  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements, including safe operations around traffic, construction zones, and challenging terrain
  • Ensure crew vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and field-ready

Who We’re Looking For

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 3–7+ years of land surveying experience
  • Prior experience leading or supervising a survey crew
  • Proficiency with Trimble equipment and data collection systems
  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles, methods, and procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and legal documents
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and lift equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, or a related field
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Understanding of coordinate systems and control networks
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms and drone/UAS mapping
  • Strong leadership presence with excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, problem-solving capability, and ability to work independently

Typical Work Environment

  • Outdoor field work on construction sites, roadways, underdeveloped land, and urban environments.
  • Occasional office work for data review and project coordination.
  • Travel to project locations may be required.
