What is insurance business intelligence?

Insurance Business Intelligence (BI) refers to the use of technology, data analysis, and reporting tools to help insurance companies make informed business decisions. BI professionals in the insurance sector gather and analyze large volumes of data related to policies, claims, customer behavior, and market trends. Their insights help organizations optimize processes, identify risks, improve customer service, and drive profitability. By leveraging BI, insurance firms can gain a competitive edge and adapt quickly to changing market conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance business intelligence professional?

To thrive as an Insurance Business Intelligence professional, you need strong analytical skills, industry knowledge, and a background in statistics or data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, SQL databases, and knowledge of insurance-specific software or certifications like CPCU are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you translate complex data into actionable insights for stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for driving data-driven decision-making and optimizing business performance in the competitive insurance sector.

How does an insurance business intelligence professional typically collaborate with underwriters, claims analysts, and other departments within an insurance company?

Insurance Business Intelligence professionals regularly work cross-functionally with teams such as underwriting, claims, and actuarial departments. They gather requirements, analyze data trends, and present actionable insights that support risk assessment, pricing strategies, and claims optimization. Effective communication is key, as BI professionals must translate complex data findings into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. This collaboration helps ensure that data-driven decisions are integrated into core business processes, driving both operational efficiency and improved customer outcomes.

Job description

Jump Trading Group is committed to world class research. We empower exceptional talents in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science to seek scientific boundaries, push through them, and apply cutting edge research to global financial markets. Our culture is unique. Constant innovation requires fearlessness, creativity, intellectual honesty, and a relentless competitive streak. We believe in winning together and unlocking unique individual talent by incenting collaboration and mutual respect. At Jump, research outcomes drive more than superior risk adjusted returns. We design, develop, and deploy technologies that change our world, fund start-ups across industries, and partner with leading global research organizations and universities to solve problems.
Jump Trading's Business Intelligence team is focused on empowering the firm with analysis and insight that maximizes revenue and influences high-stakes global decision making. This team develops data pipelines, supports an enterprise BI analytics platform, and provides research across many areas of the organization. At Jump, solving hard problems with cutting edge technology is our business. Jump relies heavily on open-source solutions in our large and distributed global infrastructure that includes several large high-performance computing environments, a large low latency trading infrastructure, and significant supporting infrastructure.
As a Business Intelligence Researcher in New York, you will have the hands-on opportunity to work with all areas of the organization while gaining a keen understanding of the use of data across the firm.
We're looking for talented data scientists and researchers who are relentlessly curious and have a gift for connecting the dots across data sources, systems, teams, and ideas. Top talent shows up in more than one shape -- you might thrive by embedding deeply within a specific area to become its go-to expert, or as a well-rounded generalist who opportunistically dives into high-impact problems across the business. We value both paths and will help you find the one that fits your strengths.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead and contribute to efforts that surface meaningful business intelligence insights
  • Partner with Developers, Researchers, and Data Analysts to solve challenging problems, whether by going deep in a single domain or spanning many
  • Follow threads of information across teams and systems, connecting disparate inputs into coherent insights and actionable recommendations
  • Work with technology teams on process design, workflow, data management, etc.
  • Liaise with research and trading teams on topics including post-trade statistical analysis of trading performance
  • Broadcast key insights globally to connect the company across regions
  • Produce research that educates and influences exchange decision making on market structure, product availability, and more
  • Other duties as assigned or needed

Skills You'll Need:
  • Relentless curiosity, an instinct to ask thoughtful questions, dig beneath the surface, and keep learning
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to link details across different data sources, processes, and departments to broader business impact
  • Deep interest in and passion for trading and global markets
  • Ability to communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences, translating in both directions
  • Self-starter, scrappy, and creative, with good instincts and a nose for making money
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities
  • Ability to quickly learn business concepts, internalize priorities, and network effectively with peers
  • Engineering experience working with programming languages for automation tasks (Python, etc.)
  • Practical understanding of database concepts and ETL pipelining
  • Experience with data analysis, SQL, Linux
  • Reliable and predictable availability

Benefits
  • Discretionary bonus eligibility
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA, FSA, and Dependent Care options
  • Employer Paid Group Term Life and AD&D Insurance
  • Voluntary Life & AD&D insurance
  • Paid vacation plus paid holidays
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Wellness Programs

Annual Base Salary Range
$175,000-$200,000 USD
