Job description

Assistant Superintendent - Sheet Metal
Position Overview
As an Assistant Superintendent - Sheet Metal at a Modigent operating company, you will support the Superintendent in leading on-site execution of commercial sheet metal projects. This includes HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation, air distribution systems, custom sheet metal components, flashing, and related mechanical air-side systems. You will assist in managing field teams, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards while adhering to SMACNA guidelines and industry best practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Superintendent in planning, coordinating, and supervising on-site sheet metal project functions, including daily crew management, scheduling, material control, equipment rentals, and trade/subcontractor coordination.
  • Support development of solutions to resolve field issues promptly, including troubleshooting duct fitment, airflow, or installation challenges.
  • Conduct physical site surveys to assess conditions, report findings in writing as required, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform accurate material takeoffs and support procurement/ordering for sheet metal ductwork, fittings, insulation, hangers, and related components.
  • Review project scope, drawings, specifications, and shop drawings with the Superintendent after equipment and subcontractors are procured.
  • Ensure all site personnel comply with project procedures, company policies, safety programs, SMACNA standards, building codes, and environmental requirements; document incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with the shop/fabrication team for production scheduling, deliveries, prefabrication, and field integration of sheet metal systems.
  • Conduct job-site inspections, ensure work meets company standards, and participate in duct testing, balancing coordination, startup, and commissioning as needed.
  • Assist in ensuring completed projects have required startup documentation, testing reports, warranty information, as-builts, and close-out materials.
  • Track and support approval of weekly time submissions for field personnel.
  • Support client walk-throughs, progress meetings, and interactions to ensure satisfaction and maintain strong relationships.
  • Help track employee progress, performance, and skill development under the Superintendent's guidance.
  • Assist with interviewing prospective field personnel and provide recommendations.
  • Enforce all safety requirements with emphasis on working at heights, tool safety, and fall protection; ensure consistent PPE use and coordinate with safety officers as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Assists the Superintendent in leading and directing sheet metal field crews (technicians, fabricators, and apprentices). No formal direct reports, but provides day-to-day guidance and oversight on assigned projects.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in field supervision, foreman, or assistant superintendent roles within commercial sheet metal, HVAC ductwork installation, fabrication, or related mechanical construction.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred; additional trade or construction education a plus.
  • Certifications/Licenses: OSHA 10/30 preferred. Sheet metal journeyman certification or equivalent a plus. Valid driver's license required.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolding for extended periods; bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, and work overhead. Comfort working in dust, noise, extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and at heights.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Active construction job sites. This is a safety-sensitive position. Strict adherence to Modigent safety policies, OSHA standards, and site-specific requirements is required.

Required Skills
  • Strong knowledge of sheet metal systems (duct fabrication methods, joining/sealing techniques, hangers/supports, insulation, custom fittings) and integration with HVAC systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (SMACNA, IMC, ASHRAE) and safety regulations (OSHA).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with teams, clients, inspectors, and stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, punctual, with excellent multi-tasking and follow-up abilities.
  • Proficiency in basic project tools (Microsoft Office, field software/apps) is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, field-oriented environment and travel to project sites as required.
