Job description

Mission Critical is an international practice for Burns & McDonnell involving exciting, collaborative work across many departments.
The Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer will participate on both multi-disciplinary and controls-specific engineering teams to develop and review Building Automation Engineering design packages, perform calculations and develop engineering solutions in support of capital and retrofit projects in a variety of locations. Work duties can consist of any of the following depending on client, project, and consultant role:
  • Assists in development of design drawings and specifications for design of primarily HVAC control systems and EPMS, for both PLC-based systems and DDC-based systems (System is client-specific).
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical design teams to develop Sequences of Operations and Point Lists for HVAC control and electrical monitoring of equipment and systems.
  • Create engineering drawings for control panel and field wiring designs including installation details, bill of material, and P&IDs
  • Manage quality reviews of project submittals.
  • Evaluate technical bids and managing vendor and subconsultant contracts.
  • Review and approving of vendor and subconsultant drawings, including Sequences of Operation, Points Lists, Engineering Drawings, Bill of Materials, Graphics, and Test Scripts.
  • Participate in Software Bench Tests, Software Factory Acceptance Tests, and Equipment Factory Witness Tests.
  • Provide technical assistance during commissioning at project site.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Facilitate multi-consultant and Owner meetings for design changes and implementation.
  • Lead production of engineering drawings using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD Electrical, or ePlan
  • Supports RFI responses and associated work plans.
  • Ensures adherence to client and industry standards and applies client or industry standards, guidelines, specifications, practices and procedures in preparing designs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program required and 3 years of applicable engineering experience/consulting preferred.
  • Master Degree in above Engineering programs or related and 2 years of applicable engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Minimum 2 years of either Building Automation System (BAS) or mechanical HVAC engineering experience preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Proficient in Smart Plant instrumentation (SPI) in the development of instrument datasheets
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Revit experience preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification Preferred.
