Job description

Build the Testing Capabilities Behind Products HVACR Professionals Trust

Why Fieldpiece?

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We’re known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every day - and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future. Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we’re looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

Why This Role?

Reliable products begin with rigorous, thoughtful testing.

As a Senior Test Engineer, you’ll take ownership of verification and validation activities throughout the new product development process. You’ll translate product requirements into comprehensive test strategies, develop test methods and laboratory capabilities, perform hands-on testing, analyze results, and provide recommendations that directly influence product design, quality, performance, and reliability.

This is a highly hands-on role for an experienced engineer who can independently determine what needs to be tested, develop the appropriate methods and equipment, and drive the work forward. You’ll collaborate across mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, systems, quality, manufacturing, product management, and project management teams while helping Fieldpiece strengthen its test automation, data acquisition, and laboratory capabilities.

This position is based in our Orange, CA office with an exciting move to Tustin, CA in 2028.  We have a hybrid work schedule, with employees typically working onsite three days per week. Additional onsite days may be required for laboratory testing, product development activities, team collaboration, or other business needs. Travel is expected to be up to 10%.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop verification and validation strategies, test plans, procedures, acceptance criteria, and reporting methods based on product requirements and technical risks.
  • Translate requirements into effective test methods that evaluate product functionality, performance, reliability, durability, and readiness.
  • Design and build test fixtures, instrumentation, laboratory setups, automated test systems, and data acquisition methods.
  • Execute functional, performance, reliability, environmental, prototype, laboratory, and field testing throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot product failures, test equipment, and unexpected results; analyze data and recommend corrective actions, design improvements, and follow-up testing.
  • Maintain verification documentation, requirements traceability, testing schedules, resource needs, and technical reports.
  • Coordinate testing with cross-functional teams, external laboratories, suppliers, and engineering partners.
  • Provide technical guidance to Test Technicians and help improve Fieldpiece’s laboratory capabilities, automation, and test engineering processes.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

  • End-to-end ownership: Influence testing from early product requirements and prototypes through verification, validation, and product readiness.
  • Hands-on engineering: Personally develop fixtures, instrumentation, automation, and laboratory setups - not simply oversee testing performed by others.
  • Multidisciplinary products: Work with electromechanical products that integrate mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, systems, and connected technologies.
  • Capability building: Help advance Fieldpiece’s test automation, data acquisition systems, laboratory practices, and repeatable test methods.
  • Direct product impact: Use test data and engineering judgment to identify risks, guide design improvements, and help deliver best-in-class products.

In Your First Year, You’ll Likely

  • Become a trusted test engineering partner to Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams and complete verification and validation activities for multiple new product development programs.
  • Establish clear, comprehensive test plans and improve requirements-to-test traceability.
  • Develop repeatable test methods, fixtures, instrumentation, and automated data acquisition capabilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in product test engineering, verification and validation, reliability engineering in a new product development environment.
  • Experience developing test strategies, plans, and procedures from product requirements and engineering specifications.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building test fixtures, laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and automated test systems.
  • Strong electromechanical product testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause-analysis capabilities.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, instrumentation, engineering data analysis, and technical reporting.
  • Ability to independently organize, prioritize, and manage multiple testing activities across concurrent development projects.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain test status, findings, risks, priorities, and recommended actions.
  • Ability to build trust and work effectively across multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams.
  • A customer-focused mindset and commitment to ensuring products meet real-world performance, quality, and reliability expectations.

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience with HVACR products, refrigeration systems, professional tools, or test and measurement instrumentation.
  • Experience with reliability, environmental, or field-validation testing.
  • Familiarity with structured new product development processes.
  • Experience with Dewesoft, LabVIEW, or similar data acquisition and automation platforms.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.

Why You’ll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long term—in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
  • Work alongside talented, collaborative teammates who are passionate about innovation and solving real-world problems.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a company where your ideas are heard, your expertise is valued, and your contributions help shape the future of our products and business.

Benefits & Perks

We believe great work starts with supporting our employees. That’s why we offer a competitive total rewards package designed to promote your health, financial well-being, work-life balance, and professional growth.

  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus opportunity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Hire to Retire philosophy—Individual Development Plans for everyone and a commitment to supporting career development

  • Music program, including music rooms in all U.S. offices and onsite guitar, piano, and voice lessons in California
  • Recognition programs, launch parties, and team-building events to celebrate shared successes

  • Teamwork: We collaborate, support one another, and win as a team.
  • Urgency: We move quickly, stay agile, and focus on what matters most.

At Fieldpiece, we’re building more than innovative products - we’re building careers. If you’re looking for a place where your work matters and your contributions are recognized, we’d love to meet you.

The California base annual salary range for this role is currently $113,000-137,000 plus bonus. Pay scales are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data.
