AspectInstrumentation Engineer InternInstrumentation Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a degree in electrical, mechanical, or instrumentation engineeringBachelor's or master's degree in engineering; professional licensure may be required
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in manufacturing, oil & gas, or automation industriesFull-time professional role in similar industries, with increased responsibilities
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with installation, testing, and maintenance of instrumentation systemsDesigning, implementing, and maintaining instrumentation systems and controls

The main difference between an Instrumentation Engineer Intern and an Instrumentation Engineer lies in experience and responsibilities. Interns are in training, assisting with tasks, while engineers are fully responsible for designing and managing instrumentation systems.

What does an Instrumentation Engineer Intern do?

An Instrumentation Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and maintaining instruments and control systems used in various industries like manufacturing, oil and gas, or pharmaceuticals. Their tasks typically include supporting senior engineers in calibrating instruments, troubleshooting control systems, collecting data, and preparing technical reports. Interns also learn about industry standards, safety procedures, and the integration of sensors and automation equipment. This hands-on experience helps them gain practical knowledge and prepares them for a full-time engineering role.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an Instrumentation Engineer Intern?

As an Instrumentation Engineer Intern, you'll typically assist with the design, calibration, and testing of instrumentation systems used to monitor and control engineering processes. Expect to work closely with senior engineers, technicians, and other interns on tasks such as data collection, sensor installation, and troubleshooting control systems. You'll also have opportunities to participate in team meetings, contribute to project documentation, and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and equipment. This role is a great way to develop practical skills and gain exposure to the collaborative nature of engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Instrumentation Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instrumentation Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of instrumentation principles, process control, and basic electrical or mechanical engineering, often supported by coursework in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as PLC programming software, data acquisition systems, and CAD platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in real-world project environments. These competencies are crucial for accurately assisting in the design, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation systems while ensuring safety and operational efficiency.

Job description

About Mariana Minerals
Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company on a mission to supply the critical minerals powering modern energy, AI, and defense technologies. We're reimagining the minerals supply chain by combining deep industry expertise with advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
The Role
We are hiring a Chemical Engineering Intern to work on real, high-impact problems within the Process & Plant Engineering team. You will contribute directly to our LithiumOne project, working closely with engineers and domain experts.
This role is designed to provide hands-on experience building and shipping solutions, not just supporting tasks.
What You'll Do
  • Support development and refinement of process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for a lithium brine extraction and purification flowsheet
  • Assist with mass and energy balance modeling across key unit operations including evaporation, impurity removal, and lithium product conversion
  • Conduct literature reviews and vendor engagement to evaluate reagent selection, membrane technologies, and downstream processing options
  • Support preparation of engineering deliverables for feasibility and prefeasibility studies, including input to equipment sizing and capital cost estimation
  • Assist with laboratory or pilot-scale test work data analysis to validate process assumptions and inform flowsheet optimization
Desired Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, with coursework in thermodynamics, mass transfer, and reaction engineering
  • Familiarity with process simulation tools (e.g., METSIM, Aspen, or similar) is an asset
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills; ability to synthesize data into clear engineering summaries
  • Interest in hydrometallurgy, critical minerals, or battery materials supply chains preferred
  • Proficiency in Excel for data analysis; experience with Python or MATLAB a plus
Why Join Us?
At Mariana Minerals, you'll be part of a mission-driven team reshaping the way critical minerals are sourced and supplied globally. You'll have the autonomy to make big decisions, the tools to innovate, and a culture that values ownership, smart automation, and collaboration.
Our culture is built on three principles:
Extreme Ownership - We take full responsibility for outcomes, relentlessly driving toward solutions.
Engineer Out Requirements, then Automate - We simplify, optimize, and then automate for scale.
Share Your Legos - We collaborate openly, share knowledge, and empower each other to build bigger, better solutions.
Join us as we build the future of responsible mineral sourcing and supply.
Mariana is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
