Position Overview

Operations Instrumentation & Electrical Technician

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the plant, the maintenance, and repair of all instruments, control systems, and electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform operations on plant equipment and auxiliaries as directed, including starting, stopping, and clearing equipment during normal operations, emergencies, and for repairs.
• Adhere to established first aid practices, plant safety rules, and emergency response procedures.
• Prepare maintenance requests for equipment needing repair.
• Prepare reports, logs, and time sheets; perform general housekeeping duties.
• Participate in on‑or off‑the‑job training as required.
• Respond personally to plant emergencies, including callouts and overtime as needed.
• Work rotating and standard shifts with periodic shift changes.
• Ensure compliance with the Environmental Compliance Program and take precautions to prevent non‑compliance incidents.
• Perform work safely, resulting in no accidents, and comply with the company safety manual(s) and all environmental permits.
• Make routine chemical readings and tests.
• Perform preventive maintenance on all major equipment, systems, and emergency backup systems.
• Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
• Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment.
• Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability.
• Assist in periodic physical inventories with UES warehouse personnel and standards.
• Inspect, repair, install, and remove pumps, compressors, valves, filters, nozzles, and other power plant equipment and auxiliaries.
• Inspect, repair, install, and remove motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries; work with electrical systems up to 15,000volts.
• Utilize, troubleshoot, and analyze DCS, PLC, and HMI turbine control equipment.
• Provide services to affiliates of the Company in accordance with the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and related Policies and Procedures.
• Perform all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor not specifically stated here.
• Adhere to all terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
• Subject to PHMSA pre‑employment drug and random drug/alcohol screening.

Physical & Working Conditions

• Work on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing.
• Routinely lift up to 75pounds.
• Wear protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, and high‑voltage protective gear.
• Work safely with hazardous materials with appropriate training.
• Be physically capable of climbing stairs, ladders, working at heights, and operating in adverse conditions during operations and emergency activities.
• Enter and work in confined spaces.
• Pass an initial respirator pulmonary function test and periodic tests thereafter as required.
• Work extended hours and varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Perform operational, maintenance, or emergency functions as required, possibly in a safety‑sensitive role.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Graduation from an accredited Instrument Technical Program or an approved and accredited apprenticeship program with two (2) years of technician experience in a related industry is desirable.
• Four (4) years of technician experience with increasing responsibility in a related industry may substitute for the above.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well with others, be self‑directed, and apply creative solutions to unique instrumentation & electrical problems.
• Ability to work from blueprints.
• Skilled in the use of hand and power‑driven tools.
• Successfully complete job‑related tests.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Strong personal computer skills, including the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and some familiarity with AutoCAD.
• Experience working with voltages up to 15,000volts highly desirable.
• Preferred: LM6000 gas turbine experience.
• Previous power plant experience as a plant operator highly preferred.
• Current Arizona driver’s license in good standing.
