Instrument And Control Engineer information

What does an instrument and control engineer do?

An Instrument and Control Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and maintaining equipment used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery, and processes. They ensure that instruments and control systems are reliable, efficient, and operate safely within industrial facilities such as power plants, manufacturing plants, and oil & gas refineries. Their work involves selecting appropriate instruments, integrating control systems, troubleshooting faults, and optimizing processes for performance and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instrument and control engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instrument and Control Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or instrumentation engineering, strong analytical skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in a related field. Proficiency with PLCs, DCS systems, SCADA software, and industry standards like ISA is essential, and certifications such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top professionals apart in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of industrial processes and support ongoing technological advancements.

What are some typical challenges faced by instrument and control engineers when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Instrument and Control Engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams. A common challenge is ensuring that control systems are seamlessly integrated with other engineering disciplines, which requires clear communication and a deep understanding of project specifications. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and managing tight deadlines while maintaining safety and compliance standards can be demanding. Building strong working relationships and proactively addressing potential integration issues early in the design phase helps to mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Instrument And Control Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Electronics, or Control Engineering; certifications like Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering; similar certifications in electrical systems
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, process industriesPower plants, electrical design firms, manufacturing
Industry UsageProcess control, automation, instrumentation systemsPower systems, electrical equipment, circuit design
Job FocusDesign, install, and maintain control systems and instrumentationDesign and develop electrical systems and components

While both roles require a background in electrical engineering and similar certifications, the Instrument And Control Engineer specializes in automation, control systems, and instrumentation within industrial settings. In contrast, the Electrical Engineer focuses more broadly on electrical systems, power distribution, and circuit design. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What can I do with instrument and control engineering?

Instrument and control engineers design, develop, and maintain systems that monitor and regulate industrial processes, such as manufacturing, energy production, and chemical processing. They work with control systems, sensors, and automation tools, often using programming languages like PLC or DCS, to ensure efficient and safe operation of equipment. This field offers opportunities in industries like oil and gas, power generation, and pharmaceuticals, requiring technical skills and knowledge of industry standards.

Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

The Role

The team is seeking a seasoned Senior Manager, Market Data Engineering (Capital Markets Technology) with strong capital markets expertise to design, integrate, and manage the ingestion of market and reference data from both vendor-based and inhouse source systems into the Asset Control (AC) Platform. This role plays a critical part in enabling accurate, scalable, and governed data feeds that support businesscritical trading, risk, regulatory, and analytics systems across the enterprise.

The successful candidate combines deep technical delivery experience with a strong understanding of financial instruments, market data vendors, and assetclassspecific data structures.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain robust data ingestion and distribution pipelines for market and reference data within the Asset Control (AC) Platform.
  • Integrate external vendor feeds (e.g. Bloomberg, LSEG) and internal source systems, ensuring accurate normalisation, enrichment, and persistence of data.
  • Develop and maintain inhouse data feeds to support downstream front, middle, and backoffice systems, including trading, risk, compliance, and reporting platforms.
  • Serve as a technical lead and subjectmatter expert for market and reference data, advising on best practices for data modelling, symbology mapping, and assetclassspecific attributes.
  • Manage the handling of security and instrument identifiers (e.g. CUSIP, ISIN, FIGI, Sedol) across the data lifecycle, including vendor crossreferencing and symbology resolution.
  • Ensure data quality, lineage, controls, and consistency in alignment with enterprise data governance standards.
  • Partner closely with business, technology, data governance, and vendor teams to analyse requirements, resolve data issues, and support platform evolution.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers within the team, contributing to technical standards, design reviews, and delivery practices.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Strong handson experience integrating market and reference data from major vendors such as Bloomberg and LSEG.
  • Proven knowledge of security and instrument reference data, including CUSIP, ISIN, FIGI, and their use across the trade lifecycle.
  • Solid understanding of multiple asset classes (e.g. Equities, Fixed Income, FX, Derivatives) and their associated market and static data attributes.
  • Strong experience designing scalable, resilient data pipelines and feeds in a distributed data platform environment.
  • Experience working with data quality, reconciliation, lineage, and control frameworks in regulated environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders and translate business requirements into technical solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with security master or asset control platforms.
  • Background in data governance, metadata management, or reference data domain models.
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring senior engineers in delivery teams.
