Job description
At Idaho National Laboratory, you'll calibrate, adjust, evaluate, modify, and repair electrical, physical, and dimensional measurement standards and measuring/test equipment to assure accuracy and traceability to national standards, physical constants, ratio-type devices, or consensus standards in nuclear and radiological facilities. Set up and develop measurement systems to provide calibration of new/unique instruments and devices. Troubleshoot faulty circuits and repair as necessary to ensure compliance in accordance with requirement specifications. Write procedures for engineering approval to ensure control and consistency of measurement processes.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Install, modify, repair, troubleshoot, and calibrate nuclear reactor and/or facility equipment. Align, adjust, and calibrate equipment according to approved procedures or manufacturer specifications.
- Perform preventive/predictive/corrective maintenance on nuclear systems, safety systems, and components.
- Install control and measurement instruments on existing or new equipment and facility infrastructure systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) and Safety Analysis Report (SAR).
- Measure levels, pressures, temperatures, flow, and analytical processes.
- Utilize test equipment to troubleshoot and analyze instrumentation-related circuits. Troubleshoot and repair discrete component-level failures which include reading schematics, wiring diagrams, relay schedules, P&IDs operating Digital Volt Meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, current sources; and soldering/de-soldering discrete components and integrated circuits to industry standards.
- Maintain and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) / Programmable Automatic Controllers (PAC) programs and associated Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for industrial processes.
- Interact with system engineers and nuclear facility operators to resolve problems.
- Identify and lead efforts to improve work control procedures and maintenance processes to enhance efficiency and safety. Participate in work order planning and walk-downs as assigned.
- Attend training as directed by the training coordinators and supervision.
- Mentor junior staff and look for opportunities to involve them in current projects.
- May perform setup and operation of specialized equipment for ATR fuel element testing and prototype modeling for hardware surveillances.
- May originate Document Change Requests (DCR) to existing Instrument procedures and Reactor Control and Instrument drawings. Review Detailed Operating Procedures (DOP), Work Orders (WO), and Maintenance Work Requests (MWR) for human performance and workability.
- Maintain equivalent equipment for Advance Test Reactor Critical (ATRC) facility.
- Keep current standard lab calibration records on all test equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
- This position requires the the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE 'L' or clearance which requires US Citizen.
- Obtain Radiological Worker qualification within 45 days of starting work and maintain qualification for the duration of employment.
Certifications/Qualifications Required:
- Depending on work location, fissile material handler.
- If position is at ATR, certify as ATR Reactor Instrument and Controls Technician (RICT).
- If position is at MFC, maintain the MFC Nuclear I&C Technician Qualification (QNMFCICT).
- Testing Designated Position (TDP).
- Respirator user.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Associate of Science degree in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Laser Technology preferred.
- Vocational Certificate (such as but not limited to Process Instrumentation Control Vocational Certificate).
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Working Conditions:
The work environment includes an office, buildings, and a field environment. The field environment may include exposure to adverse weather, working in high traffic areas, potential exposure to hazardous chemicals/waste, and noisy and/or loud equipment. Field work may include working with hazards involving the use of power tools, lasers, and equipment which subjects the employee to mechanical and electrical hazards, moving vehicles, and heavy equipment. Position requires use of protective clothing and respirator. Position requires working shifts longer than 8 hours/day, overtime/irregular hours, and working along. Positions at ATR requires working rotating shift work.
Job Information:
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Reactor Instrument Control Technician (RICT) to work on our ATR Operations Facility Support team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) facility with every Friday off.
- The pay range for this position is: Level 4 ($36.08/hr - $59.52/hr) / Level 5 ($41.42/hr - $70.41/hr). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
