Lead Instructor - Cosmetology

Fort Collins - IBMC College

JOB SUMMARY:

The Lead Instructor functions in a support role in the management of the clock-hour programs. This role requires working with the Director of Education and Cosmetology Program Support Specialist in maintaining excellent staff through interviewing, training, classroom observations, and resolving issues that may hinder student retention, and overall development and continuous improvement of the program. This position may also be required to fulfill instructor duties. The Cosmetology Lead Instructor is also responsible for ensuring the successful operation of the salon floor.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Program and Classroom Management

• Ensure the program adheres to ACCSC and DPOS educational standards and requirements.

• Collaborate with Cosmetology Program Support Specialist to supervise and support cosmetology instructors to ensure effective delivery of curriculum and adherence to educational standards and classroom policies through classroom and clinic observations.

• Audit aPlus+ attendance in Canvas to ensure accuracy of daily clock hour recording including hours missed and make up time compared and cross-referenced with student sign-in/sign-out sheets.

• Maintain dress code and professionalism ensuring instructors adhere to established dress code and maintain a professional environment.

• Determine potential and current problems within the program and communicate with Director of Education and Cosmetology Program Support Specialist to resolve these problems efficiently and effectively.

• Coordinate with Cosmetology Program Support Manager to manage resources and equipment to ensure well-maintained and equipped classrooms and clinics.


Instructor Development and Support Responsibilities

• New instructor training in collaboration with the Cosmetology Program Support Specialist to conduct comprehensive training covering essentials such as Canvas (LMS), aPlus+ Attendance system, Envision (POS) system, curriculum delivery, and classroom policies and procedures.

• Work closely with instructors to ensure grading accuracy, adhering to established late policy and exam make-up policies.

• Monitor and ensure timely entry of grades by instructors and that final grades are submitted promptly as per deadlines.

• Provide remediation training to explain the importance of accurate clock-hour attendance reporting.

• Provide ongoing training for all clock-hour instructors covering updated curriculum, policies and procedures, and classroom and student management.

• Identify, contact and schedule guest speakers and organize field trips to provide students with additional learning opportunities.

• Collaborate with Cosmetology Program Support Specialist and Corporate Academic Team to provide professional development opportunities to ensure instructors are updated with the latest industry knowledge and best practices through ongoing education.


Student Support

• Coordinate with DOE and Student Service Coordinator to discuss and resolve student concerns related to attendance, grades, behavior, and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).

• Collaborate with Student Services Coordinator to track student attendance and develop Student Support Plans for students with frequent absences to enhance student retention and graduation rates by addressing issues that lead to poor attendance and/or program withdrawals.

• Maintain student dress code and professionalism ensuring students adhere to established dress code and maintain a professional environment.

• Assist Career Services with the PSI process.


Student Clinic/Salon Floor

• Ensure all compliance requirements are met during instruction on the clinic floor (state and national).

• Mentor students throughout the cosmetology process on the salon floor and ensure timely completion and proper execution of client services.

• Resolve all client or student concerns quickly and efficiently, including immediate resolution of client safety concerns to ensure customer satisfaction.

• Conduct daily observation of the clinic floor to ensure all policies and procedures are followed and customers are satisfied.

• Ensure liability forms are filled out by clients and track client records for optimal service.

• Assist in the marketing of the IBMC Cosmetology salon to ensure client retention for student learning.

• Track and submit clinic sales reports on salon success to campus and corporate leadership.


Meetings and Other Duties

• Schedule and conduct weekly cosmetology instructor meetings. Invite Cosmetology Program Support Specialist and Corporate Academic Team.

• Attend Cosmetology Lead Instructor, Summit and Esthetics program calls/meetings.

• Attend department, campus and company meetings as requested by campus management.

• Participate in educator and professional development as required by credentialing agency and accrediting body.

• Assigned as secondary instructor in cosmetology clinic floor.

• Provide temporary coverage of classes if an instructor is absent.

Qualifications

• Current Cosmetology license.

• Minimum of four years of salon experience is required. Teaching experience preferred.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The position requires light work, occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds while frequently lifting up to 10 pounds. Work is performed in a classroom and/or lab environment on a college campus. Instruction requires standing for long periods of time (up to 5 hours at a time), expressing complex topics through speech, sufficient vision to write notes for instruction, and hearing to interact with students. The worker is exposed to chemicals and chemical smells in the workplace. The worker is not otherwise exposed to adverse environmental conditions.


Working Hours

8:00am-5:00pm M-F; Hours may vary and include some evenings and Saturdays
