Job description

Francis Marion University invites applications for a Trades Specialist who, under general supervision, performs skilled duties involved in the maintenance, repair, and modification of buildings and equipment.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Installs, repairs, or replaces building components, including locks, door closers, windows, glass, walls, and other sections thereof, masonry, carpet, tile, vinyl tile, light fixtures, ballasts, bulbs, toilets, sheetrock railings, roofs, and miscellaneous other elements of buildings and items of equipment.
  • Surveys job requirements and requests parts, tools, equipment, and/or materials needed.
  • Assists other craftsmen or, to the extent of their own expertise, accomplishes necessary tasks in maintenance and repairs of plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry related items.
  • Properly prepares and paints elements of buildings and items of equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs locks, door closures, and panic bars.
  • Can respond to facilities problems during other than normal working hours, earning overtime; may serve as primary person on call on a rotating basis earning overtime.

State Requirements: Formal training or trades experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require certification or licensure.
FMU Preferences: High School graduate with 3-5 years' work experience directly related to the area of employment. A trade course would be helpful but not required. Desirable skills but not required: plumbing, welding masonry, concrete work, rough carpentry, framing, drywall construction, painting, etc. Must be able to see well enough to read chemical labels accurately in various lighting conditions and to operate equipment safely at normal sound cues from other traffic and from equipment being operated.
*Must have a valid SC Drivers License.
Normal Working Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00am- 5:00pm. Summer Hours will vary.
State Classification: Trades Specialist III, KC30
Pay Grade: GEN06
Salary: $37,944
