Job Description
Title: MASTER PLUMBER - ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL
Position Type: Non-Exempt
Compensation - Salary Range: $28.5086 - $47.9757/ hour
Primary Function:
Performs skilled plumbing work in the maintenance and repair of School Division buildings, grounds and facilities. Work involves installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems. Performs semi-skilled work on mechanical equipment and performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks requiring knowledge of building trade skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational/technical training and possession of a Master Plumber's Certificate, and 3 to 5 years of journey level experience in plumbing trades; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Necessary and Special Qualifications:
  • Possess a valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia; registered by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Master Plumber; must obtain state certification in back-flow testing within six months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the common methods, tools, and equipment used in plumbing installation and repair work; comprehensive knowledge of applicable plumbing codes.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and EPA standards and occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skilled in performing highly skilled plumbing work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, sketches, and drawings; ability to plan for and estimate time and materials needed for various projects.

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Performs skilled plumbing tasks including changing faucet washers, stems, seals, etc.; installing water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; repairs water line leaks and breaks; and repairs toilets by changing tank bulbs, overflow tubes, etc.
  • Maintains and repairs sewer systems to include septic tanks and grinder pumps and their associated controls; installs gas lines and sprinkling systems (fire and lawn), injectors and injector pumps for sewer systems; maintains and repairs boilers, furnaces, and pumps.
  • Estimates time and materials needed for completion of projects; installs, tests and certifies back-flow prevention systems.
  • When requested, provides plumbing data and suggestions for renovation projects and additions; when requested, plans and executes plumbing changes and modifications and provides subsequent data to archives.
  • Performs scheduled relief valve inspections; operates precision auger equipment which films the location and nature of sewer blockages and broken pipes.
  • May be required to operate back-hoes and trenching equipment to perform required job.
  • Responds to after-hours calls; assists other trade workers.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

In the event of severe weather conditions or emergency situations, the School Division may suspend normal operations and/or cancel classes. If this occurs, all employees deemed essential must remain at or report to their work as soon as conditions reasonably permit. The designation of essential depends on an employee's duties as well as the circumstances for suspension of normal operations.

Terms of Employment:
Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
