Job description

Description
Specialization:
Orthopaedic Surgery
Job Summary:
HCA Florida Healthcare is seeking to employ a dedicated and certified Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join a well-established group of Orthopedic Surgeons. This role provides comprehensive adult orthopedic care across three HCA facilities in Broward County: HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital (Tamarac, FL), HCA Florida University Hospital (Davie, FL), and HCA Florida Westside Hospital (Plantation, FL).
This dynamic, Monday-through-Friday position offers an exceptional blend of independent outpatient clinical practice, operating room first-assisting, and inpatient hospital management. The ideal candidate takes a high degree of initiative, possesses excellent communication skills, and thrives in a structured, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinic & Office Work
  • Independent Patient Care: Conduct comprehensive histories, physical exams, and develop individualized treatment plans for post-ops, physical therapy/injection follow-ups (hip, knee, shoulder), and lower back pain MRI follow-ups.
  • Volume Goal: Work toward independently managing a daily outpatient volume of 10-15 patients
  • Diagnostics & Procedures: Interpret and order imaging studies and labs. Perform joint injections and aspirations (primarily knees) in the office and during hospital consults.
  • Care Coordination: Lead a weekly pre-op conference with surgical schedulers every Monday to review authorizations and clearances for the upcoming two weeks. Manage and close out telephone encounters regarding medication requests and surgical inquiries.
Operating Room & Inpatient Care
  • OR Utilization: Assist in the operating room on an as-needed, emergency-only basis when standard surgical assist staff is unavailable. Active OR duties are rare, but require a baseline knowledge of positioning, prepping, draping, and wound closure.
  • Perioperative Orders: Enter all pre-op/post-op orders and reconcile home medications via eClinicalWorks (eCW).
  • Inpatient Rounding: Conduct post-op rounds, recognize abnormal exam findings, formulate treatment plans, and order necessary labs/tests. Rounds must be completed early in the morning before clinic or OR shifts begin.
  • Discharge Management: Ensure elective joint patients are safely discharged by Post-Op Day 1 (barring extraneous circumstances). Coordinate closely with Hospitalists, nursing staff, PT, social work, and the Ortho Coordinator at each facility to streamline patient education and discharge summaries.
Inpatient Consults
  • Consult Management: Check hospital EMR daily for overnight or prior-day consults. Perform evaluations, formulate preliminary treatment plans, provide patients with follow-up instructions/business cards, and discuss all cases with the attending physician for final approval.
Weekly Schedule & Workflow Overview
This full-time schedule features a structured weekly split, balancing inpatient management, office hours, and dedicated administrative time across the region:
  • Early Week (Monday & Tuesday): Focuses heavily on morning hospital rounding to evaluate weekend consults and remaining elective patients, followed by full-day office clinic hours.
  • Mid-Week (Wednesday & Thursday): Begins with morning rounds at Woodmont, followed by a dedicated block for coordinating surgery orders and pre-op medications. The remainder of the day is split between afternoon office clinics (focused on post-ops and new ER referrals) and designated administrative time to handle phone encounters.
  • End of Week (Friday): Starts with morning rounds at University, followed by a half-day morning office clinic. The entire afternoon is reserved as focused administrative time to complete charts, wrap up telehealth encounters, finalize orders, and contact hospitals to resolve any lingering patient issues before the weekend.
Position Requirements ("Must-Haves")
  • Credentials: Active, unencumbered Florida Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license and Board Certification.
  • Proactive Clinic Ownership: Take immediate initiative to keep the office running efficiently (ensuring patients are roomed, X-rays are ordered, and injection materials are prepared ahead of time).
  • Organization: Maintain a thorough to-do list, leave detailed messages when interacting with patients, and always provide a formal sign-out for any incomplete tasks.
  • Professional Attributes: Must be highly committed, enthusiastic about patient care, willing to collaborate closely with the surgical team, and driven to grow into a highly independent clinical role. Excellent communication skills are essential.
Incentive & Benefits Package
  • Employed position offering a competitive salary
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with match, Life Insurance, Flexible spending accounts, CME
  • Benefit of no state income tax in Florida
