How much do injection mold design jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for injection mold design in the United States is $19.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $20.67 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Injection Mold Design vs Mold Manufacturing?

AspectInjection Mold DesignMold Manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating detailed mold designs and specificationsBuilding and assembling molds based on designs
Skills & CertificationsCAD proficiency, mold design certificationsMachining, assembly, and tooling certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD softwareMachine shops, manufacturing floors
Industry UsageDesign phase of injection molding processProduction phase of mold creation

Injection Mold Design involves creating detailed plans for molds using CAD software, focusing on design accuracy and functionality. Mold Manufacturing, on the other hand, involves physically building and assembling the molds based on those designs. Both roles are essential in the injection molding industry but differ in their focus, skills, and work environment.

How much do mold setters make?

Mold setters, who prepare and set up molds for injection molding machines, typically earn between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on experience and location. Skilled mold setters with certifications and knowledge of machinery may earn higher wages and additional benefits.

How much do injection mold engineers make?

Injection mold engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $60,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior engineers or those with specialized skills in CAD software and mold design may earn higher salaries, often exceeding $100,000 annually.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in injection mold design, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in injection mold design often encounter challenges such as optimizing mold designs for manufacturability, managing tight tolerances, and ensuring effective cooling to reduce cycle times and prevent defects. Collaboration with engineers, machinists, and production teams is key to addressing these issues, as it allows for early detection of potential design or manufacturing problems. Staying current with CAD software advancements and continually refining knowledge of materials and tooling processes also help in overcoming these hurdles and producing high-quality, cost-effective molds.

How to become a mold designer?

To become a mold designer, typically a candidate needs a background in mechanical engineering or industrial design, along with proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD. Gaining experience through technical training, apprenticeships, or entry-level positions in mold making or manufacturing is also important, and certifications in mold design can enhance job prospects.

What is injection mold design?

Injection mold design is the process of creating molds used in the injection molding manufacturing method to produce plastic parts. It involves designing the mold cavities, cooling systems, runners, gates, and other components to ensure the production of high-quality and dimensionally accurate parts. Skilled injection mold designers use specialized CAD software and must consider factors like material flow, cooling rates, and part ejection. Good mold design helps optimize production efficiency, part quality, and tool longevity.

Is injection molding a good career?

Injection mold design is a specialized engineering role that involves creating molds for manufacturing plastic parts, requiring knowledge of materials, CAD software, and manufacturing processes. It offers opportunities in industries such as automotive, consumer goods, and medical devices, with potential for career growth and technical skill development. Job stability depends on industry demand and individual expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Injection Mold Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Injection Mold Designer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials science, and mold-making processes, typically supported by a degree in engineering or relevant technical training. Proficiency in CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, along with familiarity with mold flow analysis tools, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality, efficient molds that support optimized manufacturing and product reliability.
