Infrastructure Testing information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrastructure testing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Infrastructure Testing, you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, operating systems, and security protocols, often supported by certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH). Familiarity with testing tools such as Nmap, Wireshark, Metasploit, and vulnerability scanners is essential for identifying and mitigating risks. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals interpret results and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for ensuring robust, secure, and high-performing IT infrastructures.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in infrastructure testing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Infrastructure Testing often encounter challenges such as ensuring comprehensive test coverage across complex, multi-layered environments and keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies. Another frequent challenge is coordinating tests across various teams, including network, security, and application teams, to ensure seamless integration and performance. Addressing these challenges typically involves adopting robust automation tools, maintaining clear communication channels among stakeholders, and continuously updating testing methodologies to align with current best practices. Staying proactive and collaborative helps mitigate risks and ensures high-quality infrastructure.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Testing vs Network Testing?

AspectInfrastructure TestingNetwork Testing
FocusEvaluates hardware, servers, storage, and overall system infrastructureAssesses network performance, security, and connectivity
Skills & CertificationsIT infrastructure, cloud platforms, certifications like CompTIA Server+Networking protocols, Cisco certifications, CCNA
Work EnvironmentData centers, server rooms, cloud environmentsNetwork operations centers, enterprise networks
Industry UsageIT companies, data centers, cloud providersTelecom, IT, cybersecurity firms

While both roles involve testing within IT environments, Infrastructure Testing focuses on the overall hardware and system setup, whereas Network Testing concentrates specifically on network performance and security. Understanding these differences helps organizations ensure both their infrastructure and network are optimized and secure.

What is infrastructure testing?

Infrastructure testing is the process of evaluating and validating the components that make up an organization's IT infrastructure, such as networks, servers, databases, and hardware, to ensure they are secure, reliable, and perform as expected. This testing identifies vulnerabilities, configuration issues, or performance bottlenecks before they can impact business operations. It often includes security assessments, load testing, disaster recovery drills, and compliance checks. By regularly conducting infrastructure testing, organizations can minimize downtime, enhance security, and ensure regulatory compliance.

JOB SUMMARY
The Field Tester III is responsible for validating ASI's autonomous vehicle software through real-world vehicle testing, simulation testing, and system analysis. This role focuses on advanced validation strategies, scalability testing, and troubleshooting complex system behaviors across both field and simulated environments.
As a Level III contributor, the Field Tester III plays a key role in improving the efficiency and scalability of ASI's testing operations by contributing to automation efforts, identifying technical risks, and collaborating with engineering teams to refine validation strategies. This role requires hands-on interaction with autonomous systems, test vehicles, and supporting test infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Execute and support advanced validation testing of autonomous vehicle software in both real-world and simulation environments
  • Develop and execute scalability and system validation strategies to ensure reliable system performance
  • Troubleshoot complex system behaviors observed during testing and work with engineering teams to diagnose root causes
  • Contribute to test automation by implementing basic scripting solutions using tools such as Python or Bash
  • Analyze test data and system performance metrics to identify trends and potential areas for improvement
  • Operate and test construction or heavy equipment vehicles during controlled test operations following required safety protocols
  • Work closely with engineering and scrum teams to conduct validation testing for new software releases
  • Document and track defects using tools such as Jira and Jama
  • Support integration testing involving onboard and offboard systems and supporting test infrastructure
  • Provide input into improving testing methodologies, validation frameworks, and operational testing processes
  • Participate in both on-site and off-site test operations as required to support program objectives

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS
  • 5+ years of experience in software testing, hardware testing, validation engineering, or quality assurance roles
  • Experience working in both real-world and simulation-based testing environments
  • Familiarity with validating complex software systems, ideally within robotics or autonomous systems
  • Basic scripting experience using Python, Bash, or similar tools for automation or data analysis
  • Experience troubleshooting complex system behaviors during validation or field testing
  • Familiarity with bug-tracking and requirements tools such as Jira and Jama
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the ability to identify technical risks and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with software engineers, systems engineers, and test teams
  • Comfortable learning how to operate and test construction or heavy equipment during required training and ramp-up periods

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with robotics, autonomous systems, or heavy equipment platforms
  • Experience supporting simulation-based scalability testing
  • Familiarity with integrated system testing involving both software and hardware components
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum-based engineering environments
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows

BENEFITS
