Job Description

Civil Service Title- Civil Engineer Intern
* IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE, OR BE REACHABLE ON THE OPEN-COMPETITIVE LIST.
The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.
Serves as Civil Engineer Intern in the Division of Bridge, Bridge Painting Unit. Directs all functions pertaining to the protective coating of the City's bridges. Oversees the review of all contract documents, reports and the planning scheduling of contract work. Directs the preparation of scopes and specifications for construction contracts. Serves as liaison to outside agencies and offices including NYSDOT to ensure the proper engineering coordination and review of joint projects. Advises the Director on development of goals and objectives and the evaluation of contractor and consultant performance. Reviews and approves final cost estimates on construction work to be performed. Evaluates the work of consultants supervising construction projects. Directs, supervises and provides guidance to subordinate staff in technical and other matters. Plans, schedules and coordinates the activities of subordinate staff to meet the performance objectives and other requirements of NYCDOT related bridge protective coating. Depending on the nature of the project and in emergency situations, certain tasks may require field visits on weekends or during overnight hours. Performs other related duties.
Preferred Skills
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. Candidates with a Motor Vehicle Driver's license valid in the State of New York is preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is preferred.
