Infrastructure Deployment Engineer information

What is an infrastructure deployment engineer?

Infrastructure Deployment Engineers are IT professionals responsible for planning, implementing, and managing the deployment of technology infrastructure such as servers, networks, and cloud services. They work to ensure that new systems and upgrades are installed efficiently, securely, and with minimal disruption to business operations. Their role often includes automating deployment processes, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating with other teams to support the organization's IT strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrastructure deployment engineer?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Deployment Engineer, you need expertise in network engineering, systems administration, and infrastructure design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Ansible, Terraform, VMware, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), as well as certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, is common. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These abilities ensure that complex infrastructure deployments are executed reliably, securely, and efficiently to support organizational needs.

What are some common challenges infrastructure deployment engineers face when coordinating large-scale rollouts, and how can they be addressed?

Infrastructure Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight project timelines, ensuring cross-team communication, and adapting to unforeseen technical issues during large-scale deployments. To address these, it's important to implement detailed project planning, maintain clear documentation, and establish regular check-ins with stakeholders. Building strong relationships with network, security, and software teams also helps streamline troubleshooting and minimize downtime, leading to more successful deployments.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Deployment Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure Deployment EngineerNetwork Engineer

Work EnvironmentData centers, cloud environments, on-premises infrastructureNetwork operations centers, enterprise networks, ISPs
Industry UsageIT infrastructure deployment, cloud services, data center setupNetwork design, troubleshooting, security, and maintenance

While both roles involve networking and infrastructure, the Infrastructure Deployment Engineer focuses on deploying and managing overall IT infrastructure, including servers and cloud systems. The Network Engineer specializes in designing, implementing, and maintaining network systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

The Infrastructure Deployment Technician is responsible for installing the physical components of our IT environment across offices and sites. This role focuses on low voltage cabling, server rack builds, network hardware installation, and audio-visual (AV) deployments, working under the direction and standards defined by our IT Infrastructure Engineering team. Extensive travel is a core requirement of this role, up to approximately 75% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Install and terminate low voltage cabling (data, voice, and related infrastructure), including pulling, labeling, dressing, and testing cable runs.
  • Build and dress server racks, including mounting rails, patch panels, cable managers, UPS units, switches, firewalls, and other network/compute equipment.
  • Install, mount, and connect network equipment such as switches, firewalls, wireless access points, and related hardware following documented standards.
  • Deploy and install audio-visual solutions including displays, projectors, speakers, microphones, cameras, room controllers, and related components in conference rooms and shared spaces.
  • Perform cable patching and port mapping in network closets and server rooms.
  • Partner with project teams and technical stakeholders to interpret build guides, rack elevations, wiring diagrams, and implementation plans, ensuring consistent, standards-based deployments.
  • Conduct basic validation and testing (link lights, connectivity checks, AV signal testing) and document results for handoff to Infrastructure Engineers.
  • Maintain clean, organized network closets and rack environments, including labeling, cable management, and adherence to company standards.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure Engineers during cutovers, migrations, and go-live events to execute defined on-site activities and support successful implementation.
  • Document work performed, including as-built photos, port maps, labeling schemes, and updates to site documentation.
  • Coordinate with building management, general contractors, and low-voltage vendors as needed to support site readiness and installations.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and best practices when working on ladders, lifts, in ceilings, and around electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Contribute to the development, refinement, and ongoing adoption of Meriton infrastructure deployment standards, including installation practices, cabling and labeling conventions, documentation requirements, and site-readiness processes.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a hands-on infrastructure role such as low voltage technician, cabling technician, AV installation technician, or data center / rack-and-stack technician.
  • Practical experience pulling, terminating, and testing low voltage cabling (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a; fiber experience is a plus).
  • Experience building and dressing racks and installing network hardware (switches, firewalls, patch panels, cable managers, etc.).
  • Experience installing AV hardware in conference rooms or commercial spaces (displays, projectors, microphones, speakers, cameras).
  • Experience installing building security equipment (internal/external cameras, badge readers, intercom systems at entry points, electronic strikes/door hardware, door contacts, motion detectors, structured cabling) is preferred but not required.
  • Experience supporting Avigilon-based systems for unified management (badge plus camera control) is preferred but not required.
  • Basic understanding of network concepts (VLANs, patch panel to switch port mapping, PoE, uplinks), enough to follow engineer-provided diagrams and instructions.
  • Ability to read and follow floor plans, riser diagrams, rack elevations, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong attention to detail with pride in cable management, labeling, and clean, professional installs.
  • Comfortable using hand and power tools, test equipment (cable testers, toner/probe), and ladders/lifts as required.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel heavily and regularly to sites nationwide, as needed.
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

Skills and Attributes

  • Reliable, organized, and able to execute work according to standards and runbooks.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work closely with Infrastructure Engineers, project managers, and on-site stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to adapt to site conditions while still following standards.
  • Ownership mindset and commitment to high-quality, safe, and professional installations.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and process improvement skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, and can articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Regular travel to company locations and project sites to support installations, upgrades, cutovers, and onsite infrastructure initiatives, approximately 75%.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment (typically up to 50 pounds).
  • Ability to work on ladders and lifts and in tight spaces such as ceilings, network closets, and under-floor spaces.
  • Regular travel to office, branch, and project locations; occasional evening or weekend work during cutovers or critical deployments will be required.
