Infrastructure Deployment Engineer information

What is an infrastructure deployment engineer?

Infrastructure Deployment Engineers are IT professionals responsible for planning, implementing, and managing the deployment of technology infrastructure such as servers, networks, and cloud services. They work to ensure that new systems and upgrades are installed efficiently, securely, and with minimal disruption to business operations. Their role often includes automating deployment processes, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating with other teams to support the organization's IT strategy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrastructure deployment engineer?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Deployment Engineer, you need expertise in network engineering, systems administration, and infrastructure design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Ansible, Terraform, VMware, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), as well as certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, is common. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this field. These abilities ensure that complex infrastructure deployments are executed reliably, securely, and efficiently to support organizational needs.

What are some common challenges infrastructure deployment engineers face when coordinating large-scale rollouts, and how can they be addressed?

Infrastructure Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight project timelines, ensuring cross-team communication, and adapting to unforeseen technical issues during large-scale deployments. To address these, it's important to implement detailed project planning, maintain clear documentation, and establish regular check-ins with stakeholders. Building strong relationships with network, security, and software teams also helps streamline troubleshooting and minimize downtime, leading to more successful deployments.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Deployment Engineer vs Network Engineer?

Work EnvironmentData centers, cloud environments, on-premises infrastructureNetwork operations centers, enterprise networks, ISPs
Industry UsageIT infrastructure deployment, cloud services, data center setupNetwork design, troubleshooting, security, and maintenance

While both roles involve networking and infrastructure, the Infrastructure Deployment Engineer focuses on deploying and managing overall IT infrastructure, including servers and cloud systems. The Network Engineer specializes in designing, implementing, and maintaining network systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

The Infrastructure Deployment Engineer plays a critical role in delivering hardware infrastructure across 11:11 Systems’ global data center footprint. Reporting to the Senior Director of Infrastructure Deployment and Data Center Management, this individual will lead deployments from planning through completion, coordinating cross-functional teams, validating infrastructure designs, and ensuring projects are executed on time and to standard. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in hands‑on environments, demonstrates strong technical and organizational skills, and enjoys optimizing deployment workflows through process improvement and automation.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead infrastructure deployment projects from kickoff through production, including rack‑and‑stack, cabling, provisioning, and documentation.
  • Coordinate project needs across Data Center Infrastructure, Procurement, Cloud Infrastructure, and Network Infrastructure teams.
  • Create and maintain accurate BOMs, deployment documentation, rack elevations, and cable matrices.
  • Develop and support automation and scripting efforts to improve deployment consistency and efficiency.
  • Validate compatibility and readiness of compute, storage, and network hardware as well as supporting data center power infrastructure before deployment.
  • Participate in product enablement efforts by deploying and validating hardware for new offerings.
  • Ensure DCIM (NetBox/Nlyte) and tracking tools are consistently updated to reflect deployed infrastructure.
  • Support remote site work by building documentation and guidance for DC technicians and remote hands.
  • Travel occasionally to data centers for project execution, audits, or support.
  • Work supportively with colleagues, operating in a manner consistent with 11:11’s Code of Business Ethics and Company Values.
  • Responsibly receive, transmit, and handle company data and information per company data handling agreements, work procedures, and policies.
  • Review and follow company policies and guidelines, data privacy practices, including annual compliance training certification and policy acknowledgments.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent related work experience required.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience deploying and managing infrastructure in service-provider or enterprise‑scale data centers.
  • Experience leading technical infrastructure projects and coordinating across multiple internal teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of VMware, Cisco UCS, Cohesity, HPE, or similar service provider scale hardware and software platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting or automation tools (PowerShell, Python, Ansible) preferred.
  • Capable of managing BOMs, cable matrices, and infrastructure documentation from initial build through production deployment.
  • Familiarity with the physical deployment and maintenance of hardware in a data center operations environment
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
  • Able to travel on a limited basis for major site builds or upgrades and lift 50 lbs when onsite.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
