How much do infrared jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for infrared in California is $20.49, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.67 and $23.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs use infrared waves?

Infrared technology is used in various jobs such as thermal imaging technicians, security and surveillance specialists, medical imaging professionals, and remote sensing analysts. These roles often require knowledge of infrared sensors, cameras, and safety protocols for working with infrared equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrared technician?

To thrive as an Infrared Technician, you need a solid understanding of thermography, electrical systems, and mechanical diagnostics, often supported by a technical diploma or certification in infrared thermography. Familiarity with infrared cameras, image analysis software, and reporting systems is typically required, along with certifications such as Level I or II Infrared Thermography. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for accurately identifying issues, ensuring safety, and delivering actionable insights in maintenance or inspection environments.

What is an infrared technician?

Infrared technicians are professionals who use infrared technology to inspect, diagnose, and monitor equipment, buildings, or electrical systems. They utilize specialized infrared cameras to detect heat patterns and anomalies that are invisible to the naked eye. This helps in identifying issues like energy loss, electrical faults, or mechanical problems before they become serious. Infrared technicians often work in industries such as electrical maintenance, building inspection, manufacturing, and predictive maintenance. Their expertise helps improve safety, efficiency, and reliability in various facilities.

What is the difference between Infrared vs Radiologic Technologist?

AspectInfraredRadiologic Technologist
Required CredentialsCertification in infrared thermography, specialized trainingRadiologic technologist license, ARRT certification
Work EnvironmentIndustrial, medical, research settings using infrared camerasHospitals, clinics, imaging centers
Industry UsageBuilding inspections, medical diagnostics, researchMedical imaging, diagnostic radiology

Infrared technicians focus on thermal imaging and infrared technology, often requiring specialized certifications. Radiologic technologists operate medical imaging equipment like X-rays, requiring licensure and ARRT certification. While both work in health-related fields, infrared work emphasizes thermal analysis, whereas radiologic technologists focus on diagnostic imaging. Their work environments and credentials differ, but both play vital roles in their respective industries.

What are some common challenges faced by infrared technicians when conducting onsite inspections?

Infrared technicians often encounter challenges such as varying environmental conditions that can affect thermal readings, limited access to critical equipment, and the need to interpret subtle temperature differences accurately. They must also ensure that all safety protocols are followed, especially when inspecting high-voltage electrical systems or industrial machinery. Effective communication with maintenance teams is essential to explain findings and recommend corrective actions, making collaboration a key part of the role.
