Information Technology Contractor information

What does an information technology contractor do?

An Information Technology (IT) Contractor is a professional who provides specialized IT services to businesses on a contractual basis. They may work on short-term or long-term projects, handling tasks such as software development, network administration, cybersecurity, or IT support. Unlike full-time employees, contractors are typically self-employed or work through an agency, offering flexibility in project selection and work schedule. Their expertise is often sought after for specific technical needs, system upgrades, or temporary staffing solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an information technology contractor?

To thrive as an Information Technology Contractor, you need a strong background in IT infrastructure, troubleshooting, system administration, and networking, typically supported by a relevant degree or industry certifications. Familiarity with tools such as Windows/Linux operating systems, cloud platforms, cybersecurity frameworks, and certifications like CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and strong communication are essential soft skills for effectively interacting with clients and team members. These skills and qualities are crucial because IT contractors often work independently across diverse projects and must quickly address client needs in dynamic environments.

What does a typical workday look like for an information technology contractor?

A typical day for an Information Technology Contractor often involves assessing client IT systems, troubleshooting technical issues, implementing solutions, and ensuring systems run smoothly. Depending on the project, you might set up networks, migrate data, update software, or enhance cybersecurity measures. Contractors frequently work both independently and in collaboration with in-house IT teams or other vendors to achieve project goals. Flexibility is common, as priorities can shift quickly based on client needs or urgent incidents. This dynamic environment offers valuable experience with varied technologies and provides opportunities to develop a broad skill set.

Information Technology Specialist – Internal Support (DoD-Focused GovCon Environment) Position Summary

ATSC, a federal contractor supporting the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is seeking an experienced Information Technology (IT) Specialist to provide internal IT support for corporate systems, infrastructure, and users. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the technical readiness and security posture required to operate within a regulated federal contracting environment. The IT Specialist will support day-to-day IT operations, ensure compliance with cybersecurity frameworks applicable to DoD contractors (e.g., NIST SP 800-171, CMMC), and contribute to a secure and responsive IT infrastructure that enables successful contract performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to internal staff including troubleshooting, system maintenance, and resolution of hardware/software/network issues.
  • Administer and maintain corporate IT systems including servers, workstations, collaboration tools, VPN, and cloud services.
  • Ensure IT systems and processes align with DoD-related cybersecurity requirements such as NIST SP 800-171, DFARS 252.204-7012, and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC).
  • Manage user accounts, access controls, group policies, and software updates within Active Directory and related environments.
  • Support onboarding/offboarding of personnel, including provisioning of IT assets and access according to internal and client compliance requirements.
  • Maintain asset inventory, licensing records, and IT documentation to support audits and system reviews.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of corporate cybersecurity tools such as endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and logging systems.
  • Support periodic security assessments, internal audits, and documentation of Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms).
  • Coordinate with vendors and external support services as needed for escalated technical issues or procurement.
  • Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery planning and testing.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related field—or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience providing IT support in a professional environment, ideally within a federal contracting or compliance-driven setting.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, networking fundamentals, and endpoint management.
  • Familiarity with federal cybersecurity standards (e.g., NIST 800-171, DFARS, CMMC). Ability to lead CMMC implementation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and communication skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting internal IT for a government contractor with DoD clients.
  • Security+ or other DoD 8570-compliant certification.
  • Experience with MDM solutions (e.g., Intune), cloud administration (e.g., Azure AD, AWS), and centralized logging tools (e.g., Splunk, LogRhythm).
  • Knowledge of contract-specific IT compliance practices, such as enclave separation and data handling under export control (ITAR/EAR).
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret level clearance is required for this role.
