Job description

The Information Security Intern supports the organization’s cybersecurity program by assisting with security operations, monitoring, and awareness initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience with enterprise security tools, threat detection, and compliance processes.

The intern may be involved in some or all of the responsibilities listed below. This is not an exhaustive list, and additional tasks or projects may be assigned based on team needs and the intern’s interests and skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Security Monitoring & Incident Response
    • Review and triage alerts from CrowdStrike Falcon, Rapid7 InsightIDR, and SIEM tools, escalating confirmed or suspicious activity
    • Monitor email security platforms (KnowBe4, Abnormal Security) to analyze phishing reports, identify missed threats, and recommend actions
  • Security Operations & Tooling
    • Support the security team queue by reviewing, routing, and resolving requests
    • Assist with audits of security tool coverage across endpoints and accounts, identifying deployment gaps
  • Vulnerability Management & Compliance
    • Review vulnerability findings, track remediation, and follow up with system owners
    • Assist with collecting and organizing compliance evidence to support audit readiness
  • Access Reviews & Risk Identification
    • Conduct periodic user access reviews to identify stale accounts, dormant sessions, and excessive permissions
    • Research emerging threats, indicators of compromise, and relevant advisories
  • Security Awareness & Communications
    • Support phishing simulations and security awareness training, including content review, scheduling, and reporting
    • Assist with drafting internal security communications and compiling security metrics for leadership
  • Security Testing Support
    • Assist with internal penetration testing activities, including basic reconnaissance and documentation of findings under supervision

Qualifications (Basic)

  • Pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of networking and security concepts
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn

Compensation and Benefits: 

This position pays $18.50 an hour with paid holidays.

This is a paid short-term internship opportunity with the National Wildlife Federation. NWF is happy to work with the applicant to obtain relevant credit(s) through college/university programming, such as directed independent study (DIS), internship credit hours, etc. Applicants should indicate if they intend to pursue this in a cover letter submitted with the online application.
