What is an industrial system engineer?

An Industrial System Engineering job focuses on designing, analyzing, and optimizing complex systems that integrate people, machines, materials, and information to improve efficiency and productivity. Professionals in this field identify inefficiencies, streamline processes, and implement solutions in industries like manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and energy. They use principles from engineering, operations research, and data analysis to enhance performance, reduce costs, and ensure quality. Industrial System Engineers work across various sectors, improving workflows, supply chains, automation, and overall operational effectiveness.

What does an industrial system engineer do?

Industrial System Engineers often spend their days analyzing workflows, identifying process inefficiencies, and developing solutions to improve productivity and quality. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including production, quality assurance, and maintenance—to implement new systems or optimize existing ones. Daily tasks may also involve data collection, conducting time studies, and using software tools to model or simulate process improvements. This role typically balances time between office-based planning and on-site observations, ensuring that solutions are both practical and impactful for the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an industrial system engineer?

A career in Industrial System Engineering requires a solid background in industrial engineering, systems analysis, and process optimization, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in industrial or systems engineering. Familiarity with simulation software, statistical analysis tools, and process mapping systems is highly beneficial, and certifications such as Lean Six Sigma or PMP are often advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial for coordinating across departments and driving process improvements. These skills enable professionals to design efficient, safe, and cost-effective industrial systems that meet organizational objectives.

What jobs can you get with an industrial system engineering degree?

An industrial systems engineering degree prepares individuals for roles such as manufacturing engineer, process improvement specialist, quality engineer, operations analyst, supply chain manager, and production manager. These positions often involve optimizing processes, using tools like Lean and Six Sigma, and improving efficiency in manufacturing, logistics, and service industries.

Responsibilities

Industrial Systems Engineer – Semiconductor Operations

Location: Santa Rosa, CA
Work Mode: Onsite
Role Type: Expert Individual Contributor (non people manager)

Position Summary

We are seeking an Industrial Systems Engineering to lead the end to end factory performance across HFTC semiconductor operations, with explicit accountability for Capacity, OEE, and Flow optimization across the full HFTC ecosystem.

This role is a hands on technical leader who partners closely with Operations, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Planning/Supply Chain, and Business IT/OT to translate business demand into measurable improvements in throughput, cycle time, delivery predictability, and cost.

This is a non people manager role with strong expectations for technical leadership, mentorship, and cross functional program execution.

Key Responsibilities

A. End to End Capacity Ownership

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve HFTC end to end capacity models and scenario analyses (short, mid, and long range).

  • Identify and quantify bottlenecks and constraints; recommend actions across loading, rebalancing, staffing, operating changes, or capital with clear tradeoffs.

  • Partner with planning and operations to align demand, starts, and delivery commitments to realistic capacity and execution plans.

  • Provide data driven justification for capital investment decisions, including timing, risk, and expected impact.

B. OEE, Productivity, and Flow Optimization

  • Define and standardize OEE and tool productivity metrics; lead loss tree and root cause analysis.

  • Drive tool productivity improvement programs with measurable and sustained outcomes.

  • Apply Theory of Constraints and variability reduction to stabilize flow, reduce WIP, and improve cycle time.

  • Validate that improvements translate into real, sustained factory performance.

C. Industrial Systems & Analytics

  • Own IE systems including capacity modeling, scheduling logic, forecasting, and standardized reporting.

  • Partner with OT/IT to define requirements, document use cases and validate system enhancements.

  • Ensure analytics and dashboards support predictable execution and decision making.

D. Technical Leadership & Program Governance

  • Lead the IE roadmap across capacity, OEE, and optimization with clear scopes, milestones, and measurable outcomes.

  • Drive cross functional alignment and execution cadence to convert analysis into sustained results.

  • Mentor industrial engineers; develop standard operating procedures, templates, and best known methods.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations Research, or related field.

  • 8+ years experience in industrial engineering, factory systems, or manufacturing analytics in semiconductor manufacturing or similarly complex manufacturing environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise owning capacity modeling, constraint management, OEE/tool productivity improvement, and end to end flow/cycle time optimization.

  • Proven ability to influence across organizations, resolve tradeoffs, and communicate technical results clearly to drive execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Systems Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Experience designing or improving factory scheduling/dispatch systems and translating system changes into measurable operational outcomes.

  • Lean / Six Sigma certification or equivalent structured problem solving track record.

  • Experience standardizing IE methods and reporting frameworks across organizations or sites.

Preferred Tools & Technical Skills

  • Power BI — dashboards, operational analytics, performance storytelling
