What is an industrial engineering intern?

Industrial Engineering Interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in an industrial engineering role to gain practical experience. They assist with projects focused on improving efficiency, productivity, and quality in manufacturing or service environments. Typical tasks may include data analysis, process mapping, workflow optimization, and supporting senior engineers on ongoing initiatives. This internship provides valuable hands-on learning that prepares individuals for future careers in industrial engineering.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can an industrial engineering intern expect during their internship?

As an Industrial Engineering Intern, you can expect to work on projects involving process improvement, data analysis, and workflow optimization within manufacturing or operational environments. Typical responsibilities may include collecting and analyzing production data, assisting with time studies, supporting the implementation of lean manufacturing principles, and collaborating with engineers, production staff, and cross-functional teams to identify efficiency opportunities. Interns often contribute to real-world projects that help reduce costs, improve safety, and streamline operations, providing valuable hands-on experience for future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an industrial engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Industrial Engineering Intern, you need a strong grasp of industrial engineering principles, data analysis, and process improvement, typically supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, simulation software, and sometimes Six Sigma methodologies is often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns stand out when collaborating with teams and presenting findings. These skills are crucial for identifying inefficiencies, supporting process optimization, and contributing value to engineering projects.

What is the difference between Industrial Engineering Intern vs Manufacturing Engineering Intern?

AspectIndustrial Engineering InternManufacturing Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in industrial engineering, systems engineering, or related fieldsUsually studying or holding a degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines
Work EnvironmentOffice settings, process analysis, workflow optimization, and data analysisFactory floors, production lines, equipment setup, and process improvement in manufacturing plants
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across various industries including logistics, healthcare, and consultingPrimarily in manufacturing, automotive, and industrial production sectors

While both roles involve process improvement and data analysis, Industrial Engineering Interns focus on optimizing systems and workflows across diverse industries, whereas Manufacturing Engineering Interns concentrate on production processes within manufacturing environments. The choice depends on your career interest in broad systems versus specific manufacturing processes.

What do industrial engineering interns do?

Industrial engineering interns assist with analyzing and improving manufacturing processes, workflows, and systems. They often gather data, use tools like CAD or simulation software, and support projects related to efficiency, quality, and safety under supervision.

Job description

About Electrified Thermal Solutions
ย
Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. But historically reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.ย

Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.ย ย
ย
To do this, we are building the Joule Hive thermal battery: an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.ย

About the Roleย

The Manufacturing Engineering Intern supports pilot production of the E-Brick refractory heating elements at the core of our Joule Hive thermal battery. The role is deliberately hands-on, combining regular casting and finishing of refractory elements, mold preparation, andย an independent capstone engineering project with direct impact on company operations.ย

Yourย workย willย tangibly deepen our understanding of producing our elements at scale.ย You will report to theย Manufacturingย Engineer.ย

What You'll Do
  • Mix, pour, vibrate, cure, fire, QC, and package refractory E-Brick heating elements as part of the Manufacturing teamย

  • Prepare molds for casting, including cleaning, assembly, and repairย

  • Prepare and document Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) samples for each production batchย

  • Identify, design,ย and implement process improvements that increase throughput, consistency, and qualityย

  • Write and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) for casting, mold preparation, and lab equipmentย

  • Keep the production area, samples, tooling, and materials clean, organized, and catalogedย

  • Execute a capstone engineering project with direct impact on company operationsย

Travel:ย No travel isย anticipatedย for this role.ย

What You'll Bring

Requiredย

  • An enthusiastic approach and resilience in the face of challenging technical problemsย

  • Experience with hands-on work in a professional or educational setting, such as lab work, production, or constructionย

  • Attention to detail andย strong communicationย skillsย

  • Demonstrated commitment to adhering to workplace safety procedures and contributing to safety cultureย

  • Comfort working with your hands; comfort working with power tools or heavy machineryย

  • Ability to lift and carry 50lb material bags, stand for extended periods, and work in personal protective equipmentย

  • Proficiencyย with Microsoft Excel or similar data management toolsย

Preferredย

  • Proficiencyย with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks,ย Onshape, or Fusion 360)ย

  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing (FDM or SLA 3D printing), including design for printability and polymer materialย selectionย

  • Coursework or project experience designing fixtures, tooling, or material-handling hardwareย

  • Experience with process improvement or operational efficiency initiativesย

$25 - $25 an hour
