Summary
The Intern, Field Service - Mill Services position will assist in mill service work and strategy development for both current and future-state activities. This role will work closely with the VP of Service, Service Department Managers, and Millwrights to support hands-on rebuilds, equipment inspections, and mechanical repair. The position will involve both office-based technical work (e.g., mechanical drawings and documentation) and on-site labor such as dismantling, inspecting, and rebuilding major paper machine components.
The ideal candidate should be an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering. The applicant must possess strong technical aptitude, mechanical problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in physically demanding industrial environments. Experience with AutoCAD and an interest in equipment design, repair, and maintenance are also important.
Responsibilities
• Support Field Service Millwrights with mechanical rebuilds of equipment including various screens, filters, headboxes, press sections, rolls, and dryer cylinders.
• Assist in preparing and modifying technical drawings using AutoCAD or other drafting tools
• Participate in the disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of mechanical systems
• Collect field measurements and help analyze wear or failure patterns
• Document mechanical improvements and assist with work procedure development
• Work with a mentor from the Service team on a defined project
• Present a final project review to peers and management
Required Skills/Abilities
• Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
• Familiarity with mechanical systems and industrial components
• Experience reading and modifying technical drawings (AutoCAD preferred)
• Strong hands-on aptitude and willingness to work in physical environments
• Effective problem-solving, time management, and collaboration skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to travel 60% of the time
Education and Experience
• Undergraduate or graduate student working toward their degree in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
Physical Requirements
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
• Service work consists of considerable time on and around machinery including paper machines. You must be comfortable in an industrial environment. Some lifting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and balancing is necessary.
