What are considered indirect taxes?

In the context of indirect tax roles, indirect taxes are taxes levied on goods and services rather than on income or profits. Common examples include sales tax, value-added tax (VAT), excise duties, and customs duties, which are collected by businesses on behalf of the government. Professionals in indirect tax often ensure compliance, accurate reporting, and proper application of these taxes in financial processes.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in indirect tax roles?

Professionals in Indirect Tax often encounter the challenge of keeping up with frequently changing tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions, especially if working for multinational organizations. Ensuring compliance while optimizing tax processes can be complex due to varying VAT, GST, and sales tax rules. Additionally, indirect tax specialists must regularly collaborate with finance, supply chain, and IT teams to implement system changes and support business operations. Managing audits and addressing queries from tax authorities also form a significant part of the role.
