What are Independent Web Developers?

Independent Web Developers are professionals who build and maintain websites or web applications on a freelance or contract basis, rather than working as full-time employees for a single company. They often work with multiple clients, handling tasks such as designing user interfaces, writing code, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing sites for performance and security. Independent Web Developers must also manage their own business operations, including client communication, billing, and project management. This role offers flexibility and variety, but also requires strong technical skills and self-motivation.

What are some common challenges independent web developers face when managing multiple clients?

Independent web developers often juggle multiple projects for different clients, which can lead to challenges in time management, setting clear expectations, and balancing workloads. Coordinating project deadlines, handling overlapping tasks, and maintaining consistent communication with various stakeholders are key aspects to manage. Utilizing project management tools and establishing clear contracts can help streamline workflows, minimize misunderstandings, and ensure that each client's needs are met efficiently. Building strong organizational habits is essential for delivering quality work on time and fostering long-term client relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and back-end technologies, along with a solid portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with development frameworks, content management systems, version control tools like Git, and optionally certifications in web development are highly beneficial. Exceptional problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and client communication abilities set top freelancers apart. These skills ensure you deliver high-quality, reliable web solutions while effectively managing client relationships and project demands.

We provide a full suite of resources across financial education, investment strategies, marketing, and practice management to support long-term success.

We foster a collaborative, performance-driven culture rooted in integrity, innovation, and service. If you’re enthusiastic about making a measurable impact in the financial services space, we invite you to grow with us.

Position Summary

The WordPress Full Stack Developer serves as a technical architect and strategist for our digital ecosystem, bridging the gap between complex backend functionality and polished front-end user experiences. This role is responsible for building, customizing, and maintaining high-performance WordPress websites. The Developer exercises independent judgment to architect scalable solutions, integrates third-party services, troubleshoots critical issues, and collaborates with marketing and design teams to ensure that digital properties align with business growth objectives and brand standards.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Development & Architecture

  • Act as the primary technical lead for the WordPress environment, evaluating project requirements to determine optimal themes, plugins, and custom development strategies.
  • Build and customize advanced WordPress themes and plugins from the ground up, ensuring code adheres to best practices (WordPress standards, security, version control).
  • Exercise independent judgment to architect database schemas, custom post types, and advanced custom fields to support complex content and marketing needs.
  • Manage staging and production environments, overseeing seamless deployments and minimizing downtime.

Full Stack Integration & Optimization

  • Handle the full stack of web development: implement responsive front-end designs using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while engineering robust back-end solutions with PHP and MySQL.
  • Integrate websites with external APIs, CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot), marketing automation tools, and e-commerce platforms (WooCommerce).
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure the website architecture supports SEO strategies, conversion rate optimization, and analytics tracking.
  • Identify patterns in site performance or user feedback; provide actionable insights and technical recommendations to the marketing leadership team to improve site speed, user experience, and functionality.

Security, Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Proactively monitor website health, including uptime, security vulnerabilities, and plugin compatibility; implement solutions to mitigate risks before they impact users.
  • Anticipate potential technical challenges (e.g., traffic spikes, third-party API changes) and implement scalable solutions to keep initiatives on track.
  • Serve as the final escalation point for complex technical issues, performing deep-dive troubleshooting into code conflicts, server errors, or database corruption.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Leadership

  • Serve as the technical liaison between the marketing team and external vendors or internal stakeholders, translating business needs into technical requirements and vice versa.
  • Collaborate with the Project Coordinator and design teams to refine workflows, ensuring that development timelines are realistic and deliverables meet quality standards.
  • Provide input into the development roadmap, proposing enhancements to the digital experience platform based on emerging technologies and business needs.
  • Represent the technical perspective in internal discussions, helping shape initiatives that support business growth through reliable, high-performing digital tools.
Requirements:

Must-Have Qualifications

Background and Education:

  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in full-stack web development.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with WordPress development, including building custom themes and plugins.
  • Proven experience with PHP development in a WordPress context.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating third-party APIs and services.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

Technology Expertise:

  • Core: PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3, SASS/LESS.
  • WordPress: Advanced Custom Fields, Custom Post Types, REST API, Theme/Plugin Development Hierarchy, Hooks (Actions/Filters).
  • Front-End: Modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue.js - preferred), responsive design principles, cross-browser compatibility.
  • Tools: Git/GitHub, npm/Webpack, Composer.
  • Server/DevOps: Experience with LAMP/LEMP stack management, cPanel, command-line interface, and staging/production workflows.

Competencies:

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues independently.
  • Project Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Attention to Detail: Commitment to writing clean, documented, and secure code.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to look beyond immediate tasks to understand how technical decisions impact long-term business goals.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to work for extended periods at a desk using a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds if/when necessary.
  • Routine use of telephone and email.
  • Office-based role with potential travel to conferences, events, and satellite offices as needed.
