What is an independent contractor?

An independent contractor is a self-employed individual who provides specific services to clients or businesses under the terms of a contract or agreement. Unlike employees, independent contractors control how and when they complete their work, do not receive employee benefits, and are responsible for their own taxes. They often work for multiple clients and are responsible for their own equipment and business expenses. Independent contractors are commonly found in industries such as construction, consulting, technology, and creative services.

What kind of work does an independent contractor do?

An independent contractor performs specific tasks or projects for clients on a freelance basis, often in fields such as writing, graphic design, programming, consulting, or construction. They typically work independently, set their own schedules, and use their own tools and equipment, completing work according to agreed-upon terms and deadlines.

What Is an Independent Contractor?

An Independent Contractor has a different type of employment agreement than a regular employee of a company. Independent Contractors are not guaranteed a steady paycheck. They cannot rely on their employer to provide all the materials and equipment needed to complete their work. The benefit to working as an Independent Contractor is that you have more control over how you conduct your work and the timeline for your projects. You must keep careful documentation for your taxes since you invoice clients for your work at an agreed rate and your clients do not pay payroll taxes or make any withholdings as they would for traditional employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor, you need strong expertise in your specific field, self-management abilities, and typically a business license or relevant credentials. Familiarity with project management tools, invoicing software, and contract management systems is often required. Outstanding communication, time management, and networking skills set successful independent contractors apart. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, maintaining client relationships, and sustaining a successful independent business.

How does an Independent Contractor typically manage client communication and project deadlines?

As an Independent Contractor, maintaining clear and timely communication with clients is essential for project success. Contractors often use a combination of email, project management tools, and scheduled meetings to keep clients updated on progress and address any concerns. Managing multiple projects simultaneously can be challenging, so setting realistic deadlines, tracking milestones, and proactively discussing any potential delays are important practices. By establishing clear expectations and regular check-ins, Independent Contractors can foster strong client relationships and ensure projects stay on track.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

An independent contractor can earn $10,000 a month through roles such as freelance software development, digital marketing, consulting, or specialized trades like plumbing or electrical work, which often require skills and experience rather than formal degrees. Success depends on expertise, client base, and the ability to scale services, often involving self-employment, flexible schedules, and building a strong reputation.

How can I make 2000 a week working from home?

Independent contractors can earn $2,000 weekly by offering specialized skills such as writing, graphic design, programming, or consulting through freelance platforms. Building a strong client base, setting competitive rates, and managing multiple projects can help achieve this income level, often requiring good time management and relevant tools or certifications.

What are some examples of independent contractor jobs?

Independent contractor jobs include roles such as freelance writers, graphic designers, web developers, consultants, photographers, and delivery drivers. These positions typically involve self-employment, flexible schedules, and the use of specialized skills or tools relevant to the specific field.

City Wide Facility Solutions is the largest management company in the building maintenance industry. We secure and manage commercial contracts and partner with skilled independent contractors to perform the work. We handle the sales, client communication, billing, and collections - so you can focus on doing what you do best.

We are selectively partnering with established Independent Contractors and service companies to service our commercial clients in the region. If you operate a structured business, deliver professional facility maintenance, restoration, or renovation services, and are looking for steady, recurring work - without the burden of chasing new contracts or managing collections - this may be a strong fit.

City Wide helps you grow your revenue, keep your crews busy, and get paid consistently - including guaranteed payment on the 10th for work performed.

We operate throughout South Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana - a strong commercial market with warehouses, medical facilities, manufacturing sites, schools, and municipal buildings.

For more information, contact Sandra Rivas at 708-365-8535 or chicagoshores-ic@gocitywide.com.

  • Ability to provide clear documentation (photos, reports, scope clarity)
The Opportunity

ity Wide Facility Solutions is seeking a qualified commercial roofing contractor to support a current client project within our portfolio.

This is a project-based opportunity with the potential for ongoing work across multiple commercial properties, depending on performance, professionalism, and execution quality.

We manage a large base of commercial clients across office, medical, industrial, and institutional facilities. Our model is built around bringing vetted service providers into well-scoped, professionally managed opportunities-allowing contractors to focus on execution, not sales.

If you are looking to supplement your pipeline with well-defined commercial work and long-term partnership potential, this may be a strong fit.

If this is your company, keep reading.

Expand into additional services (floor care, porter services, consumables, specialty cleaning) and increase revenue per account.
  • Long-Term Partnership Model
We are invested in your growth - many of our partners have scaled into six-figure and multi-crew businesses with us.
