The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Specialty Bridge Inspection Program Manager (Structural Engineer Transportation Advanced) vacancyin the Bureau of Structures!
This full-time position can be headquartered in the following locations:
- Central Office (Madison)
- Northwest Region (Superior or Eau Claire)
- North Central Region (Wisconsin Rapids or Rhinelander)
- Northeast Region (Green Bay)
- Southwest Region (La Crosse)
- Southeast Region (Waukesha)
This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from one of the DTSD office buildings listed above at least two days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary
This position is the primary engineer for the statewide structure inspection program of specialty bridges which require a hands-on/arms-reach inspections that includes bridges with nonredundant steel tension members (NSTM), structurally redundant members (SRM), internally redundant members (IRM), and complex features. The engineering responsibilities of this position involve providing expertise and technical consultation for inspection, maintenance, repair, and operation of specialty bridges to other engineers and technicians in the Bureau of Structures, regional personnel, engineering consultants, and local bridge owners/engineers and consultants acting on their behalf. The engineering responsibilities require continual high-level contacts with public and private officials and engineers/engineering consultants on complex engineering issues. This position functions under general supervision, makes independent decisions, and performs work in response to needs with little or no review of the work by the supervisor.
This position communicates with other Bureau of Structures (BOS) sections (Development, Design, Maintenance), other WisDOT personnel, other State DOT offices, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), county/local municipality personnel, engineering consulting firms, industry groups, and other external agencies. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizations skills.

Salary Information
The Advanced level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $101,296 - $114,483, plus excellent benefits. Plus, an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License.
A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.
A $3,000 sign-on bonus applies to those who do not have any prior permanent full-time state service in the last five years and agree to remain in the position for one year. The $3,000 will be paid on the first paycheck.

Travel Requirements
- This position requires the ability to frequently travel on an independent basis to project sites statewide.
- This position requires fieldwork. This fieldwork can include working in all seasons, including adverse weather conditions and working in high volume traffic conditions, bending on a limited basis, and lifting approximately 40 lbs. and carrying this load approximately 50 feet over varying terrain.
Bridge Inspector Requirements
- Certified Bridge Inspector per WisDOT Structure Inspection Manual.
- Nonredundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) bridge inspection training/endorsement.
- Ability to frequently travel on an independent basis, such as traveling 3 to 5 days a week to multiple locations in one day.
- Ability to work outdoors in conditions of heat, cold, humidity, dust, and to walk over rough terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry objects, such as tools or materials.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours.
- Ability to work in high volume traffic conditions.
- Ability to work in or near water, including safely working from a boat.
- Bridge inspection requires a level of physical agility and strength, plus the ability to work at heights up to several hundred feet above ground level safely. Access to inspection areas is gained by entering small access hatches and climbing or descending ladders and also requires crawling on beams and piers. Safety equipment including harnesses may be required. Some inspections require entering and riding in a special bucket suspended underneath the structure from a hydraulic boom on special bridge inspection machines known as a "Snooper" and "Reach-All".

To be eligible, candidates must have:
- A valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
