What is an Independent Contractor Telecom Structural Engineer?

An Independent Contractor Telecom Structural Engineer is a professional who specializes in assessing, designing, and ensuring the structural integrity of telecommunications infrastructure, such as cell towers and antenna mounts. Unlike full-time employees, independent contractors work on a project-by-project basis, often for multiple clients or firms. Their responsibilities include conducting site inspections, providing engineering analysis, creating detailed reports, and recommending solutions to meet safety and regulatory standards. They play a critical role in supporting the expansion and maintenance of telecom networks.

How do Independent Contractor Telecom Structural Engineers typically collaborate with project teams and clients while maintaining autonomy?

As an Independent Contractor Telecom Structural Engineer, collaboration usually involves regular communication with project managers, architects, and other engineers to ensure that structural designs meet both technical and client-specific requirements. While you have the autonomy to set your own workflow and schedule, it's common to attend virtual or in-person meetings, provide progress updates, and share deliverables through project management platforms. Balancing independent work with active, transparent collaboration is key to meeting deadlines and maintaining strong client relationships in this role.

Miyamoto International is in business to make the world a better, safer place. We provide expert high-performance earthquake + structural engineering and disaster mitigation services, as well as response and reconstruction assistance to some of the world's most devastating disasters. Our work improves the environment and safety of pre- and post-disaster communities, schools, hospitals, historical monuments, international icons and more. Miyamoto International is among the nation's fastest growing structural engineering companies. With 30 locations across the globe, our team members adapt to new challenges that reflect the diverse needs of the domestic and international communities we serve.
We are currently seeking a Sr. Project Engineer to be based out of our Las Vegas office. This position is one of the most exciting roles in our company. We are establishing our Las Vegas presence after years of successfully delivering projects in the region remotely. We have now made the strategic decision to build a permanent team and grow this practice locally, and you will play a key role in that expansion.
You will work directly with senior structural engineers in California and Reno who will actively mentor you, support your technical development, and involve you in meaningful project work from day one. You will gain hands-on experience in client management, business development, communication, and coordination with architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams. You will also be exposed to real engineering and management decision-making across a wide range of project types.
You may initially work on California projects remotely, but our vision is to establish and expand a strong Las Vegas structural engineering group. You will be part of the ground-floor team building this practice, with significant opportunities for growth and leadership. The potential for both your career and the office is truly unlimited.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Architectural or Civil engineering or related field (with a structural engineering focus), Master's with emphasis on structure engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of structural and earthquake engineering design experience.
  • Advanced structural analysis and design skills in all common building materials.
  • Exposure to project management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • PE license required; SE preferred.

Miyamoto International is seeking the best and brightest professionals to join our team. Our ideal candidate is a self-motivated leader with exceptional communication skills, as well as the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks. Your entrepreneurial spirit should motivate others, inspire new ideas and contribute toward business-development strategies. Successful candidates share our passion for helping others and strives to improve the quality of their work with each new challenge. This is an opportunity to expand your creativity and build your expertise in the field.
