Vice President, Programming & Production

Worcester, MA

Overview

The Vice President, Programming & Production is the chief strategic lead for all artistic programming and production at Hanover Theatre & Conservatory. In collaboration with the President & CEO, senior leadership, and THT Rep, the VP shapes the venue’s artistic identity, drives revenue, secures high‑quality bookings, and oversees production execution and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a balanced, marketable, and diverse programming strategy for the Main Stage, BrickBox Theatre, PopUp Gallery, student matinees, Broadway, and other Hanover Theatre & Conservatory events.
  • Identify, negotiate, and secure bookings from Broadway co‑promoters, producers, touring companies, presenters, and artists, ensuring financial viability and audience demand.
  • Negotiate contracts, license agreements, budgets, and financial settlements that support earned‑revenue outcomes.
  • Collaborate with operations, marketing, communications, finance, and senior leadership to integrate planning, budgeting, and marketing into programming decisions.
  • Build and maintain local, regional, national, and international relationships that advance diverse, accessible, and financially sound programming.
  • Provide strategic oversight of production operations, ensuring staffing, labor relationships, technical execution, and health‑and‑safety standards align with programming goals.
  • Supervise production facilities, including the Wurlitzer Organ, and develop capital equipment, facility upgrade, budgeting, staffing, and growth plans.
  • Identify and maximize earned‑revenue opportunities such as merchandise, concessions, rentals, production services, and new revenue streams.
  • Advise on external partner relations, technical rider review, issue resolution, and problem‑solving.
  • Champion equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility initiatives across programming.
  • Oversee programming staff, production teams, creative and design teams, independent contractors, vendors, and union crews.
  • Create and enforce facility policies, procedures, and standards for internal teams and visiting performers, promoters, and partners.
  • Administer touring show load‑ins and in‑house productions, including those from THT Rep and the Conservatory.
  • Maintain positive labor relations and adherence to collective bargaining and organizational standards.
  • Lead production meetings, mentorship, accountability, and performance‑improvement processes.
  • Innovate production workflows to support high‑volume programming while ensuring sustainable workloads.
  • Monitor and approve payroll for programming and production staff and independent contractors.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Hanover Theatre & Conservatory programming, supporting capital campaigns, annual giving, memberships, sponsorships, and grant opportunities.
  • Develop narratives, objectives, and budgets for sponsorship and funding proposals in collaboration with development, marketing, and finance teams.
  • Build and maintain relationships with philanthropic, civic, governmental, and community partners to enhance community engagement.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with advanced coursework and 8–10 years of progressively responsible senior management experience in programming and production within the performing arts or creative industries.
  • Experience in fast‑paced environments requiring meticulous attention to detail, organization, and time‑management across multiple staff and projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, event booking systems, ticketing platforms (e.g., AudienceView or similar), production technologies, facilities oversight, and financial processes related to show settlements and contract workflows.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging ticket buyers, donors, strategic partners, artists, producers, presenters, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong relationships with promoters, booking agents, and the ABT Producers Association (APAP) network.
  • Knowledge of Equity, IATSE, SDC, and other union negotiation processes.
  • Willingness to work weekdays, evenings, and weekends, move around a multi‑level venue and office space, and perform core functions for extended periods.
  • Transferable or equivalent skills, experience, or education will also be considered.
Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary range: $135,000 to $150,000. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, holidays, 75% medical, dental, and vision coverage, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), life, short‑term and long‑term disability insurances, a voluntary 401(k) plan with up to a 5% match, complimentary parking and tickets, and tax‑free reimbursement for qualified medical expenses via a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA).
