Job description

Peak Utility Services Group is an integrated group of engineering and construction companies serving the Electric, Natural Gas and Telecommunications industry. We provide a full suite of engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance services including repair, replacement, maintenance, and installation of natural gas, telecommunications, and electric infrastructure through five operating subsidiaries: Track Utilities, SiteWise, Kelly Cable, Riley Brothers, 5 Star Electric, Superior Hydrovac and Superior Pipeline Services. 

 Position Title: Welder I

Classification: Non-Exempt 

Pay Rate: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

 Essential Functions: 

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions 
  • Works with specialized equipment including welding and other necessary tools 
  • Works safely around backhoes, excavators, trenchers and dump trucks 
  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards 
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers 
  • Examines workpieces for defects and measures work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications 
  • Clamps, holds, tack-welds, heat-bends, grinds or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding 
  • Selects and installs torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals 
  • Determines required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques 
  • Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material 
  • Analyzes engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations 
  • Marks or tags material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required 
  • Prepares all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter 
  • Preheats work pieces using torches to then guide and directs flames or electrodes on or across work pieces to connect pipe 
  • Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notifies supervisors 
  • Cleans or degreases parts, using wire brushes, and portable grinders 
  • Sets up and uses ladders and shoring as necessary to complete work 
  • Uses fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies 
  • Cleans, checks fluid levels and conducts a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, performs the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required paperwork, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment 
  • Utilizes defensive driving practices 
  • Operates truck in a manner that ensures compliance with all applicable company, state and federal safety regulations 
  • Follows required company and DOT reporting procedures 
  • Maintains paperwork during the day including DVIR and driver’s log book 
  •  Ensures the truck has current licenses, tags, permits, and proof of insurance 


Success Factors: 

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions. 
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs multiple times during a work shift 
  • Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling 
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions 
  • Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers 
  • Ability to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy 
  • English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports 
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional skills  

Experience and Education:

  • Five (5+) plus years experience as a welder is required 
  • Three (3+) plus years experience in the gas or oil industry is required 
  • Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications: 
  • Possession of welding rig to include welding machine, necessary cutting equipment, and tools 
  • Candidates must pass client specific weld tests to include API-1104 and ASME B31 
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License is required within two weeks of employment. 
  • Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
