What is an independent contractor relocation package?

An independent contractor relocation package is a set of benefits or financial assistance offered to independent contractors to help cover the costs associated with relocating for a work assignment. Unlike traditional employee relocation packages, these are less common and typically negotiated individually, since independent contractors are not permanent employees. The package may include reimbursement for moving expenses, temporary housing, travel costs, or a lump sum payment. The details and availability of such packages depend on the contract terms and the company hiring the contractor.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor, and why are they important?

To succeed as an Independent Contractor, you need strong expertise in your professional field, business acumen, and often a relevant degree or industry certification. Familiarity with project management tools, accounting software, and contract management systems is important for efficiency. Excellent self-motivation, communication, and time management skills help build client trust and deliver results. These abilities are crucial for managing multiple projects, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring ongoing business growth.

How do independent contractors typically coordinate with relocation specialists when moving for a new contract?

Independent contractors often work closely with relocation specialists provided by the hiring company or a third-party service to coordinate logistics such as housing, transportation, and documentation. Since contractors may not receive the same structured support as full-time employees, clear communication about needs and expectations is crucial. It's common to negotiate which relocation expenses are covered and to manage timelines to ensure a smooth transition. Building a strong working relationship with the relocation specialist can help address challenges like finding short-term accommodations or navigating local regulations.

Job Description:

Contractor Opportunity

First Stop Health is seeking a 1099 independent contractor Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) who is detail-oriented and passionate about helping patients improve nutrition status, blood glucose control, prevent complications, and enhance overall health.

Under this independent contractor engagement, you will provide virtual nutrition counseling, diabetes self-management education and support, and lifestyle coaching to individuals and groups. You may coordinate with First Stop Health clinicians as reasonably necessary to support continuity of patient care.

The ideal contractor is passionate about delivering high-quality, evidence-based nutrition and diabetes care and creating an excellent patient experience. They bring strong clinical judgment and communication skills and are comfortable independently managing patient care engagements while meeting applicable clinical, documentation, and quality standards. Their approach to care aligns with First Stop Health’s Quadruple Aim: enhancing patient care experiences, improving population health outcomes, reducing costs, and supporting clinician well-being.

Contractor Availability

This engagement offers flexibility for the contractor to manage their availability. The contractor will independently determine and manage their availability. First Stop Health and the contractor may mutually agree upon availability needed to support patient care and program needs. Once the contractor accepts a patient appointment or other service commitment, the contractor is expected to fulfill that commitment in a timely and professional manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide virtual and telephonic nutrition and diabetes education services to patients through First Stop Health for patient care engagements accepted by the contractor.
  • Provide services consistent with applicable clinical standards and any clinical, regulatory, patient-safety, or contractual requirements applicable to services delivered through First Stop Health.
  • Complete documentation required for services provided through First Stop Health using First Stop Health’s designated platform.
  • Connect patients with appropriate resources and tools, including referrals and health information made available through First Stop Health.
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments considering medical history, laboratory values, medications, lifestyle, and cultural preferences.
  • Develop individualized nutrition interventions and meal-planning recommendations aligned with evidence-based guidelines.
  • Provide diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES), including carbohydrate counting, insulin management education, glucose monitoring, and problem-solving skills within the contractor’s professional scope of practice.
  • Develop and deliver clinical and educational content for customer needs, including webinars and speaking engagements.
  • Provide additional mutually agreed-upon professional services related to clinical products, programs, or technology, as specified in the applicable statement of work or engagement.
  • Provide clinical or program outcome data and/or analysis when included within the mutually agreed scope of services.
  • Coordinate with other treating or supporting clinicians when clinically appropriate for patients served under the engagement
  • Follow applicable clinical standards, policies, procedures, and documentation requirements and provide professional feedback regarding clinical processes when relevant to the contracted services.
  • Maintain all professional licenses, credentials, and certifications required to provide contracted services.

Requirements:

  • Active Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Active and unrestricted dietitian license in the contractor’s state of residence and any other jurisdiction required to provide contracted services.
  • Active Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential from the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education.
  • 5+ years of relevant clinical experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of medical nutrition therapy for type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, prediabetes, cardiovascular and metabolic health, women’s health, and nutrition throughout the lifecycle.
  • Excellent communication, motivational interviewing, and behavior-change counseling skills.
  • Cultural curiosity and experience engaging and working with individuals across a wide range of social, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage professional responsibilities, patient commitments, documentation, and deliverables.
  • Ability to independently become proficient with technology necessary to deliver the contracted services.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, electronic health record systems, and other technology used to support virtual care.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate equipment, internet connectivity, privacy, and a professional environment necessary to provide virtual services.

Independent Contractor Relationship

This opportunity is for an independent contractor (1099) and is not an employment position. The contractor will provide services pursuant to an independent contractor agreement and, subject to applicable clinical, legal, regulatory, patient-safety, privacy, security, and contractual requirements, will exercise independent professional judgment and control over the manner and means of performing the contracted services.

The contractor will be responsible for applicable federal, state, and local taxes and for maintaining any licenses, certifications, insurance, equipment, and other requirements applicable to their independent practice and contracted services. The contractor may provide professional services to other organizations or clients, subject to applicable confidentiality, conflict-of-interest, and contractual obligations.

Nothing in the engagement guarantees a minimum volume of patients, service engagements, hours, or compensation. Independent contractors are not eligible to participate in First Stop Health’s employee compensation or benefit programs, except as expressly provided in the independent contractor agreement.

First Stop Health is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Research shows that women, people of color and other historically underrepresented groups tend to only apply to jobs in which they meet all the job requirements. Unsure if you check every box? Apply.
