What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Independent Contractor Optometrist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry degree, a state license, and strong clinical skills in diagnosing and managing vision and eye health issues. Familiarity with optometric equipment, electronic health records (EHR), and vision testing systems is essential. Excellent patient communication, self-motivation, and strong organizational skills distinguish top professionals in this role. These capabilities enable independent practitioners to deliver quality care, efficiently manage their practice, and build lasting patient relationships.

What is an Independent Contractor Optometrist job?

An Independent Contractor Optometrist is a licensed eye care professional who provides optometric services on a contract basis rather than as an employee. They typically work with optical retailers, private practices, or healthcare facilities while maintaining control over their schedule, patient care decisions, and business operations. As independent contractors, they are responsible for their own taxes, liability insurance, and business expenses. This role offers flexibility and autonomy but requires strong business management skills.

What are the typical work arrangements and scheduling options for Independent Contractor Optometrists?

Independent Contractor Optometrists often have flexible work arrangements, such as working in multiple practice locations, retail optical centers, or providing mobile eye care services. Scheduling can vary from part-time to full-time and is frequently set in collaboration with the contracting entity, offering significant autonomy over work hours. While you may work independently, you’ll regularly coordinate with optical staff, technicians, and sometimes ophthalmologists for referrals and patient management. This flexibility makes the role appealing for those seeking work-life balance or looking to build their own client base, but it also requires strong time management skills and the ability to adapt to different work environments.

Job description

We are a small, independent comprehensive ophthalmology clinic and optical shop in beautiful Missoula, Montana seeking an independent contractor optometrist. Our clinic has a reputation for excellence in customer service and patient care offering routine eye exams along with medical and surgical eye care. Over 35 years we have built an exceptional staff and culture, a significant patient volume and a reliable referral network. Recently our comprehensive ophthalmologist with over 35 years of excellent service to the western Montana region has paused his practice abruptly due to a medical event. Our other comprehensive ophthalmologist has increased her schedule to accommodate some of his patients but we have a considerable population of established patients waiting for eye care. We believe an independently contracted optometrist could help us provide essential screenings and eye care for many patients currently on our waiting list. Optometrists experienced in glaucoma monitoring could prove especially equipped for this role. We can offer the opportunity to work with a great team of experienced staff, access to a considerable volume of established patients, a flexible schedule and percentage of revenue generated. We can also offer flexibility on the term or duration of the contract. This could be a great opportunity for either a short-term position or for a long-term practice for the right candidate. Another significant benefit is the chance to live and practice in the vibrant community of Missoula. As a university town there is a great artistic culture with many events, activities and opportunities for community engagement. In addition, the surrounding pristine Montana landscape offers immediate access to a wide range of opportunities for outdoor recreation all year long. We hope you will consider this unique opportunity and look forward to discussing with you further how you might join our team in providing excellence in eyecare to Missoula and surrounding communities. Employment Type: Contract Bonus/Commission: No
