How much do independent contractor molecular biology jobs pay per year?
What is an independent contractor molecular biology?
An Independent Contractor Molecular Biology job involves working on a project or contract basis rather than as a full-time employee. These professionals conduct research, perform experiments, and analyze biological samples to support scientific studies or biotech developments. They often work with academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, or government agencies. Independent contractors manage their own schedules, secure clients, and are responsible for taxes and business expenses. This role offers flexibility but requires strong self-management and technical expertise.
What are some common work arrangements and collaboration methods for independent contractor molecular biologists?
Independent Contractor Molecular Biologists often work on a project-by-project basis, either remotely or on-site at client laboratories, depending on the project's requirements. Collaboration usually involves regular communication with client teams, data sharing through secure digital platforms, and frequent progress updates via virtual meetings. Since contractors may be juggling multiple projects or clients simultaneously, strong organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines independently are important. This flexible arrangement allows for autonomy and exposure to diverse scientific challenges, while also requiring adaptability to various team structures and workflows.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the independent contractor molecular biology position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Independent Contractor Molecular Biology, a strong background in molecular biology techniques, experimental design, and data analysis—usually supported by an advanced degree in a biological science—is essential. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, data analysis software (such as qPCR and bioinformatics tools), and relevant certifications like GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) often enhance your technical capabilities. Exceptional problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and clear scientific communication are crucial soft skills for success as an independent contractor. These competencies ensure high-quality research outcomes, reliable project management, and effective client interactions in dynamic and often remote work environments.

Job description
Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.
DescriptionThe Gordon Laboratory at Emory University is seeking a highly motivated Research Specialist Lead to spearhead experimental studies at the intersection of cancer biology, immunology, and metabolism. The position will focus on cellular and biochemical analyses aimed at understanding how microenvironmental factors influence cancer progression. Primary responsibilities will include experimental coordination, literature review, data analysis, development of new experimental workflows, preparation and presentation of oral and written reports, and support of laboratory operations.
About the Gordon Lab
The Gordon Lab applies experimental and computational approaches to understand molecular signaling and biochemical pathways, and identify mechanisms that inform therapeutic development. Based in the Emory University Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, our laboratory benefits from close integration with translational and clinical research environments, including access to primary tissue samples and extensive opportunities for collaboration. Through our affiliation with the Pathology Advanced Translational Research Unit (PATRU), we work closely with investigators across pathology, immunology, and cancer biology. Our broader collaborations include partnerships with Georgia Tech in technology and computational method development, as well as connections to therapeutic translation through programs such as the Winship Cancer Institute Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Program.
Our research program spans both academic and industry collaborations, providing exposure to rigorous basic science, translational research, and emerging opportunities at the interface of biology and therapeutic innovation.
We strongly believe that the best science emerges from an environment of generous collaboration, supported by a culture of learning, curiosity, and the open sharing of skills and advice. In considering new members of our group, we value a positive attitude, strong evidence of prior success in laboratory settings, careful attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset that contributes positively to team culture. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects in a supportive and intellectually enriching environment.
