Job description

Symbrium, Inc. is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Detailer / Drawing Checker to join our Machine Design Group.

The primary responsibility of this position is to take completed or substantially completed 3D SolidWorks models and assemblies and turn them into accurate, complete, manufacturing-ready 2D drawings.

This is an important quality-control position in our engineering process. We need someone who understands that a good-looking 3D model is not enough. The drawing released to the shop must clearly and correctly communicate everything required to manufacture, inspect, assemble, and service the part or machine.

The right person will be meticulous, systematic, and comfortable finding mistakes before they reach manufacturing.

What You Will Do

  • Create manufacturing drawings from SolidWorks parts and assemblies
  • Produce detail drawings for machined parts, fabricated components, weldments, assemblies, and machine structures
  • Apply dimensions, tolerances, fits, hole callouts, threads, finishes, notes, and other manufacturing information
  • Create assembly and subassembly drawings
  • Generate and verify bills of material
  • Check drawings against 3D models and assemblies
  • Review drawings prepared by other designers for accuracy and completeness
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, part numbers, material specifications, quantities, notes, and revision information
  • Identify missing dimensions, conflicting dimensions, ambiguous requirements, and other drawing problems before release
  • Verify that drawings accurately reflect design intent
  • Work with designers, engineers, machinists, fabricators, and assembly personnel to resolve drawing questions
  • Incorporate redlines and engineering changes
  • Maintain drawing standards and consistency across the Machine Design Group
  • Support drawing revision and document-control processes

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong experience creating 2D mechanical detail drawings
  • SolidWorks drawing experience
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical drawing practices
  • Strong understanding of dimensions, tolerances, fits, threads, hole callouts, and manufacturing notes
  • Experience detailing machined and fabricated components
  • Ability to read and understand complex mechanical assemblies
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A systematic approach to checking your own work and the work of others
  • Understanding of how drawings are used by machinists, fabricators, inspectors, and assemblers
  • Ability to recognize when a drawing may technically be complete but is not practical or clear enough for manufacturing

Preferred Experience

Experience with any of the following is particularly valuable:

  • Custom machinery
  • Machine tools
  • Automation equipment
  • Tooling and fixtures
  • Machined components
  • Weldments
  • GD&T
  • Bills of material
  • Engineering change and revision-control systems
  • SolidWorks PDM or similar systems

The Person We Want

This job is ideal for someone who takes pride in producing excellent mechanical drawings.

You notice the missing tolerance. You catch the wrong hole callout. You question a dimension that cannot be inspected. You notice that the BOM and assembly do not agree. You think about whether the machinist or fabricator will understand exactly what the designer intended.

We want someone who understands that the drawing is the communication link between engineering and manufacturing and treats drawing quality accordingly.

If you are an experienced mechanical detailer who enjoys getting drawings right before they reach the shop floor, we would like to talk with you.
