Job description

Job Overview:
The Museum Assistant is a year round part-time position located at the following facility: Little White School Museum, 72 Polk St, Oswego, IL. Responsibilities include serving the needs of the external and internal customers of Little White School Museum and the Oswegoland Park District, while supporting the Oswegoland Park District's mission statement.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Significant involvement in serving the needs of the customer
  • Significant involvement in answering, managing, and following up with phone calls and inquiries
  • Significant involvement in assisting and supporting staff with their needs
  • Considerable involvement in providing Museum tours and assisting with historical programs and events
  • Considerable involvement in accepting Museum donations and providing receipts
  • Considerable involvement in prioritizing and performing varied tasks
  • Considerable involvement in managing the Museum store and sales
  • Considerable involvement in assisting with transcribing various documents
  • Considerable involvement in managing office functions and facility schedule
  • Considerable involvement in maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of facilities, as well as being aware of any unsafe situations and making suggestions for improvements and some involvement working with the Park District on building repairs and safety issues
  • Willingness to continue to gain knowledge in relation to the Museum and community
  • Maintaining AED and First Aid Kits, as well as updating relevant reports
  • Facilitating merchandise sales using Square Software and cash sales, as well as restocking merchandise
  • Accepting artifacts and other museum donations and completing relevant reports
  • Filling in non-regularly scheduled shifts when available
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid drivers license
  • Demonstrate interest in local history and community museums
  • Ability to plan, organize and make decisions independently and possess conflict-resolution and delegation skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal well with the public and employees of the Park District, as well as the members of the Oswegoland Heritage Association
  • Ability to understand and utilize varied information
  • Ability to operate office machinery, computers, scanners, CD disc copiers, electronic cameras, and fax machine
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; InDesign and Photoshop; FileMaker Pro; internet searching
  • Understand and exhibit behavior consistent with stated values of the District

Hours:
Monday nights (4-9pm) November through April, and as needed substitute. The Museum Assistant's schedule may vary to meet the needs of the Little White School Museum. Weekend and evening hours will be required throughout the year.
