What is an independent contractor driver?

Independent contractor drivers are self-employed individuals who provide driving services to businesses or customers without being classified as employees. They often work for ride-sharing companies, delivery services, or freight transport, using their own vehicles and setting their own schedules. As independent contractors, they are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and vehicle maintenance, and they may work for multiple companies at once. This role offers flexibility, but also requires more personal responsibility and business management than a traditional employee position.

What does an independent contractor driver do?

An independent contractor driver may work in delivery or personal transportation. If you work in freight or goods transportation, your duties are to determine the simplest route to make your deliveries, load and unload your vehicle, and fill out paperwork on behalf of your employer and the organization receiving goods. In human transportation, independent contractor drivers contract with companies and operate their own vehicles for fares, such as working for rideshare services. Your responsibilities include maintaining your vehicle, purchasing insurance, and maintaining a good driver rating.

How do independent contractor drivers typically manage fluctuating workloads and income variability?

Independent Contractor Drivers often experience fluctuating workloads and income due to factors like seasonal demand, market trends, and client schedules. To manage this variability, many drivers diversify their client base, schedule work in advance when possible, and budget carefully to account for leaner periods. Building strong relationships with reliable clients and using load boards or delivery platforms can also help secure more consistent assignments. Additionally, maintaining a well-organized schedule and proactively seeking new opportunities are key strategies for sustaining steady work as an independent contractor.

Position Overview
Floor Interior Services (FIS) is seeking professional, dependable Measure Technicians to perform accurate in-home flooring measurements and deliver an exceptional customer experience.
This is an independent contractor opportunity. The Measure Technician will visit customers' homes, evaluate project conditions, accurately measure all applicable areas, document project requirements, upload completed information, and provide the customer with an in-home installation quote.
This role is more than measuring rooms. The technician is often the customer's first face-to-face interaction with our installation team and must represent FIS with professionalism, confidence, accuracy, and urgency.
Key Responsibilities
โ€ข Travel to scheduled customer appointments within the assigned service area.
โ€ข Contact customers before arrival and maintain professional communication regarding appointment timing.
โ€ข Arrive on time, professionally dressed, and prepared to complete the assignment.
โ€ข Accurately measure rooms, closets, stairs, transitions, doorways, and other applicable installation areas.
โ€ข Identify flooring types, subfloor conditions, transitions, furniture requirements, removal needs, installation challenges, and other project-specific details.
โ€ข Create accurate diagrams, room layouts, measurements, photographs, and supporting documentation.
โ€ข Ensure all required project information is complete before leaving the customer's home.
โ€ข Upload measurements, diagrams, photographs, notes, and other required documentation within established timelines.
โ€ข Review the proposed installation scope with the customer and provide an accurate in-home quote using company-approved systems and pricing.
โ€ข Clearly explain the installation process, anticipated requirements, and next steps without making unauthorized promises.
โ€ข Answer customer questions professionally and help create confidence in moving forward with the project.
โ€ข Immediately report safety concerns, unusual site conditions, system issues, or potential scope problems.
โ€ข Protect customer information and maintain confidentiality.
โ€ข Correct measurement or documentation errors promptly when responsible for the original assignment.
Performance Expectations
Success in this role will be measured by:
โ€ข Measurement accuracy
โ€ข Quote accuracy and completeness
โ€ข On-time appointment arrival
โ€ข Timely data and documentation uploads
โ€ข Customer satisfaction
โ€ข Quote participation and conversion results
โ€ข Professional communication
โ€ข Low remeasure and correction rates
โ€ข Compliance with FIS and retail-partner requirements
Accuracy is non-negotiable. A rushed or incomplete measurement creates problems for the customer, installer, retailer, and company. Measure twice, upload once-the tape measure has no sympathy.
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Experience in flooring measurement, flooring installation, construction, estimating, in-home sales, or a related field is preferred.
โ€ข Strong mathematical, measuring, and spatial-reasoning skills.
โ€ข Ability to learn and accurately use electronic measuring and quoting systems.
โ€ข Comfortable presenting pricing and speaking directly with customers in their homes.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing documentation correctly.
โ€ข Professional appearance, communication, and customer-service skills.
โ€ข Dependable transportation and willingness to travel throughout the assigned territory.
โ€ข Smartphone, tablet, or other required technology capable of running company-approved applications.
โ€ข Ability to work independently, manage appointments, and meet established deadlines.
โ€ข Ability to pass any required background screening.
โ€ข Valid driver's license and appropriate automobile insurance.
โ€ข Ability to meet all applicable independent contractor, licensing, insurance, and business requirements.
Physical Requirements
โ€ข Ability to walk, bend, kneel, climb stairs, and move throughout occupied and unoccupied homes.
โ€ข Ability to carry and operate measuring equipment and related technology.
โ€ข Ability to safely access rooms, closets, stairs, exterior areas, and other project spaces.
โ€ข Ability to work in homes with pets, dust, construction activity, or limited climate control.
Independent Contractor Relationship
This position is offered on an independent contractor basis. The contractor is responsible for their own transportation, equipment, insurance, taxes, business expenses, and compliance with applicable laws and contractual requirements.
Nothing in this description creates an employment relationship. Final expectations, compensation, service territory, scheduling requirements, performance standards, and contractor obligations will be governed by the applicable independent contractor agreement.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal Measure Technician is accurate, organized, technologically capable, comfortable with customers, and confident discussing project pricing. They understand that every appointment is both a technical assignment and a customer-service opportunity.
We are looking for someone who can measure the project correctly, document it completely, explain it clearly, and leave the customer feeling confident about moving forward.
Compensation: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Would you like to be part of a team that helps people love where they live?
Join us at Floor Interior Services. For over 10 years, we've proudly set industry standards by delivering exceptional customer service and providing high-quality installation experiences to thousands of customers every year.
Our core value is simple: "Get better every day, help others along the way."
We're looking for team members who want to grow, take pride in their work, and make a real difference.
Come be part of a team where your work truly matters.
