Job description

The Courier is responsible for the safe, timely, and professional transportation of toxicology specimens, laboratory supplies, and related materials between healthcare providers, collection sites, and the laboratory. This position serves as an extension of the laboratory by providing exceptional customer service while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and company regulations regarding specimen integrity, chain of custody, and HIPAA confidentiality.

The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, customer-focused, and comfortable working independently while maintaining strict quality and safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specimen Transportation

  • Pick up toxicology specimens from physician offices, pain management clinics, addiction treatment centers, hospitals, urgent care centers, occupational health clinics, and other client locations.
  • Ensure all specimens are transported according to laboratory procedures while maintaining appropriate temperature and handling requirements.
  • Verify specimen labels, requisitions, and accompanying documentation for completeness prior to transport.
  • Maintain chain of custody documentation when required.
  • Deliver specimens to the laboratory within established turnaround time requirements.

Customer Service

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with laboratory clients.
  • Professionally represent the laboratory during all client interactions.
  • Answer basic questions regarding specimen pickup schedules and laboratory processes.
  • Communicate client concerns to laboratory management or the Account Management team.

Supply Management

  • Deliver laboratory collection supplies to client locations.
  • Monitor inventory levels at client sites and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Maintain organized vehicle inventory of collection materials.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Follow DOT, OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Complete daily pickup logs, mileage records, and delivery documentation.
  • Report specimen discrepancies immediately.
  • Maintain confidentiality of protected health information at all times.

Vehicle Responsibilities

  • Perform daily vehicle safety inspections.
  • Maintain a clean and organized company vehicle.
  • Report maintenance issues promptly.
  • Follow all traffic laws and safe driving practices.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with special deliveries and stat specimen pickups.
  • Support laboratory operations during periods of high volume.
  • Participate in required compliance and safety training.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • 1 year of professional driving, courier, medical courier, or customer service experience preferred.
