Job description

Applications are now open for our CAST-accredited UCSF Neurotrauma Fellowship, based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) under the direction of Geoffrey T. Manley, MD, PhD, and Michael C. Huang, MD.

ZSFG is San Francisco's only Level I Trauma Center, serving San Francisco and northern San Mateo County and a regional population of more than 1.5 million. ZSFG was the first hospital in the United States to receive Joint Commission certification for a traumatic brain injury program. Neurotrauma Fellows receive intensive training in the operative, neurocritical care, and longitudinal management of complex traumatic brain, spine, and spinal cord injury, with focused training in intracranial physiology and multimodality intracranial and spinal monitoring.

Fellows work closely with specialists in neurology, critical care, neuroradiology, and other disciplines to deliver comprehensive multidisciplinary care. Clinical responsibility progresses throughout the Fellowship toward substantial independence in clinical judgment, operative management, and leadership of the neurosurgical trauma service. At Wilma Chan Highland Hospital in Oakland, Fellows have additional opportunities for mentored and independent clinical and operative management. Concurrent experience at the UCSF Weill Neurorecovery Clinic complements the acute care rotations and provides exposure to longitudinal traumatic brain injury care and recovery after hospital discharge.

Fellows are closely integrated into the extensive neurotrauma research environment at UCSF and ZSFG, with robust opportunities to pursue individual research interests and to participate in and lead prospective clinical research, multicenter investigations, clinical trials, and efforts to shape and advance evidence-based standards and best practices in neurotrauma care. Mentored scholarly training may include clinical neurotraumatology, clinical trial design and administration, and other areas tailored to the Fellow's academic interests and career goals. Additional opportunities in basic and translational research are available through the multidisciplinary faculty of the UCSF Brain and Spinal Injury Center.

Fellows receive direct mentorship from internationally recognized leaders in neurotrauma, with particular emphasis on developing the clinical expertise, scientific portfolio, leadership experience, and professional network needed to build successful academic careers in neurotrauma.

Applications for the 2027-2028 Fellowship Year are due December 30th, 2026.
