Employer/Industry UsageSelf-employed, consulting firms, IT contractorsEmployers, IT departments, service providers

Independent Contractor Ccna professionals typically work independently on networking projects, often remotely or on a contract basis, utilizing their CCNA certification. Network Technicians usually work for companies in a fixed environment, maintaining and troubleshooting networks. Both roles require similar certifications but differ mainly in employment structure and work setting.

Can I get a job with independent contractor CCNA certification only?

An independent contractor with a CCNA certification can qualify for roles involving network installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, especially in environments that value Cisco networking skills. However, many employers prefer additional experience, security clearances, or related certifications for contracting opportunities. Having a CCNA demonstrates foundational networking knowledge but may need to be complemented with practical experience for certain jobs.

Is a CCNA still worth getting?

For an independent contractor with a CCNA, obtaining the certification remains valuable as it demonstrates foundational networking skills and can enhance job prospects in IT and network support roles. The CCNA is widely recognized and often required for roles involving network configuration, troubleshooting, and security, making it a relevant credential in the industry.

This role requires a strong, hands-on IT foundation in enterprise systems and network administration. Prior experience with ACS/VMS platforms is a plus but not required - UT will provide platform-specific training to the right candidate. This position may also be responsible for the day-to-day oversight and mentorship of a local technician.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

IT & Systems Administration

  • Administer and maintain Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and AD Certificate Authority (AD CA) services in support of PIV credentialing and the physical security environment.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and group policy objects in accordance with federal security requirements and organizational baselines.
  • Apply system and security patches, monitor server health, and ensure planned maintenance is scheduled to avoid disruption to government operations.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, configuration records, and standard operating procedures.

Network Infrastructure

  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot HP (and Cisco) network switches supporting the security infrastructure, including CLI-based configuration.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot VLANs, static and dynamic routing, and network segmentation in support of secure system operations.
  • Monitor network performance and proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve connectivity and infrastructure issues.

ACS / VMS System Administration

  • Administer and support the Gallagher Access Control System, including credential management, door/panel/reader configuration, and system integrations (training provided).
  • Administer and support the Avigilon Unity Video Management System, including camera and recording configuration, health monitoring, and troubleshooting (training provided).
  • Program system events, notifications, and alerts, including door access denials, forced-door alerts, and related security notifications.
  • Support integration of the ACS/VMS environment with related systems such as PIV/USAccess, intrusion detection, and notification/SMTP services.

Team Leadership & Support

  • May provide day-to-day direction, task assignment, and mentorship to an onsite local technician.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for ePACS-related issues, coordinating with government personnel, contractors, and outside agencies as needed.
  • Provide basic end-user training on day-to-day system operations as needed.
  • Collaborate with UT technical teams and government stakeholders to resolve complex issues and support broader physical security goals.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of hands-on IT experience, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and AD Certificate Authority / PIV-related services.
  • Solid working knowledge of network configuration and troubleshooting, including HP and/or Cisco switches, CLI familiarity, VLANs, and routing fundamentals.
  • Strong general troubleshooting skills across servers, workstations, and network infrastructure.
  • Experience with, or strong aptitude to quickly learn, physical security platforms such as Gallagher ACS and Avigilon Unity VMS (training provided).
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring junior technicians is a plus.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a government clearance/suitability determination as required for the position.
  • Relevant IT certifications (e.g., Security+, Network+, Microsoft, Cisco CCNA) are a plus.
  • A bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience (5+ years) with a technical IT focus.

WORK LOCATION

  • Washington, DC - onsite, five (5) days per week. This position does not offer remote or hybrid work.
