What is an independent associate?

Independent Associates are self-employed professionals who partner with a company to promote and sell its products or services, typically on a commission or incentive basis. They operate independently, setting their own schedules and managing their own client relationships, rather than being traditional employees. This role is common in industries like direct sales, network marketing, or legal and financial services. Independent Associates often have the flexibility to build their own business while leveraging the resources and support of the parent company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent associate?

To thrive as an Independent Associate, you generally need strong sales acumen, business development skills, and a foundational understanding of the products or services you represent. Familiarity with CRM platforms, online marketing tools, and relevant certifications in sales or the specific industry can be highly beneficial. Outstanding interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and effective time management set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for building client relationships, meeting sales targets, and maintaining autonomy in a competitive environment.

How does an independent associate typically manage their workflow and client communications to ensure success?

As an Independent Associate, you often have significant autonomy in organizing your schedule, prioritizing leads, and maintaining client relationships. Success in this role usually depends on your ability to set clear goals, use effective time management strategies, and leverage digital tools for tracking communications and follow-ups. Regular check-ins with mentors or team leaders, even in a primarily independent setting, can help you stay aligned with best practices and company objectives. Additionally, proactively networking and staying responsive to client inquiries are essential for building trust and expanding your client base.

What is the difference between Independent Associate vs Sales Representative?

AspectIndependent AssociateSales Representative

Work EnvironmentSelf-employed, flexible hours, remote or home-basedEmployed by a company, often in office or retail settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across direct sales, network marketing, and consulting industriesCommon in retail, wholesale, and B2B sales sectors

While both roles involve sales activities, an Independent Associate usually operates independently, often in direct sales or network marketing, with flexible hours and no formal employer. A Sales Representative typically works for a company, following structured sales processes and earning commissions or salaries. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job opportunity.

Job description

Litigation Associate Attorney— Logistics, Energy & Manufacturing Litigation Group

A nationally recognized litigation practice is seeking a litigation associate with at least three years of experience to join its Logistics, Energy, and Manufacturing Litigation Group in Atlanta. This group represents transportation, logistics, energy, and manufacturing clients in high-stakes, fast-moving litigation across federal and state courts nationwide. The docket is active and varied, ranging from single-vehicle claims to complex, multi-party litigation with significant exposure.

This is an opportunity to take on substantive responsibility early — first-chairing depositions, arguing motions, and managing case strategy directly with clients — within a firm that has built a national reputation defending transportation and logistics companies.

Practice Group Overview

The Logistics, Energy, and Manufacturing Litigation Group defends clients across the transportation, trucking, energy, and manufacturing sectors in matters involving:

  • Catastrophic and wrongful death claims arising from trucking and transportation accidents
  • General tort and personal injury defense
  • Products liability and manufacturing defect claims
  • Insurance coverage disputes and declaratory judgment actions
  • Regulatory and compliance matters under FMCSA and related transportation regulations
  • Cargo, logistics, and supply chain disputes

Attorneys in this group work closely with corporate risk management teams, insurers, and in-house counsel to manage litigation portfolios, often overseeing matters in multiple jurisdictions simultaneously.

What You'll Do

  • Manage an active caseload of tort, transportation, and insurance coverage matters from intake through resolution
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, fact witnesses, and experts
  • Draft and argue dispositive and non-dispositive motions
  • Conduct written discovery and manage e-discovery processes
  • Develop case strategy in coordination with senior attorneys and clients, including motor carriers, insurers, and logistics companies
  • Attend mediations, hearings, and trials; assist with trial preparation
  • Communicate directly with clients on case status, strategy, and risk assessment

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of litigation experience, preferably in transportation, trucking, or motor carrier defense
  • Experience with tort litigation, insurance coverage disputes, or products liability strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with depositions, discovery, and motion practice required
  • Strong academic credentials from an accredited law school
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Sound judgment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple matters independently
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a team-based practice
  • Active admission to the Georgia Bar required — no exceptions

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience and market
  • Full benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Group term life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with retirement planning services
  • Generous paid time off
  • Free wellness and mental health resources
  • Billable hour target of approximately 1,800 hours annually, with pro bono work counting toward the target
  • Strong track record of associate retention and long-term career development; the firm has been recognized as a certified Great Place to Work

Firm Culture

This is a full-service firm with a national platform and a collaborative, team-oriented culture. Individual contributions are recognized rather than absorbed into a large, siloed structure, and the firm places a strong emphasis on mentorship and hands-on associate development — particularly within litigation groups, where associates are given early exposure to depositions, motion practice, and direct client contact rather than being confined to document review.
