What are jobs in science?

Jobs in science encompass a wide range of careers that involve systematic study, research, and application of knowledge in fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, and more. These roles can include scientists, researchers, laboratory technicians, science educators, and science communicators. People working in science may be involved in conducting experiments, analyzing data, developing new technologies, or teaching scientific concepts. Science jobs can be found in academic institutions, government agencies, private industry, and nonprofit organizations. Pursuing a career in science generally requires strong analytical skills, curiosity, and a solid educational background in a scientific discipline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a science-related career, and why are they important?

To thrive in a science-related career, you need a solid educational background in your specific field (such as biology, chemistry, or physics), strong analytical skills, and hands-on research experience. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, scientific software (e.g., MATLAB, R, SPSS), and data analysis tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications for specialized roles. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help scientists collaborate, solve problems, and present findings. These skills and qualities are crucial for conducting rigorous research, driving innovation, and contributing meaningfully to scientific advancements.

What types of jobs are there in science?

Jobs in science include roles such as research scientist, laboratory technician, data analyst, environmental scientist, and science educator. These positions often require specialized knowledge, relevant degrees, and skills in laboratory techniques, data analysis, or scientific communication, depending on the field and level of responsibility.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in scientific research roles?

Professionals in scientific research often encounter challenges such as securing research funding, meeting publication deadlines, and managing complex experiments or data analysis. Working in science typically involves collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams, which requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and staying current with the latest scientific literature are essential for success and career advancement in this field.

What is the difference between In Science vs In Research?

Common Search & ComparisonIn ScienceIn Research

In Science typically refers to roles focused on scientific knowledge, education, and laboratory work, often within academic or educational settings. In Research emphasizes conducting experiments, investigations, and development activities, usually within research institutions or industry R&D departments. While both roles require scientific credentials, In Research often involves more hands-on experimentation and project development, whereas In Science may include teaching and theoretical work.

What professions make 200,000 a year without a degree?

In science-related fields, certain roles such as petroleum engineers, data scientists, and specialized technical consultants can earn $200,000 or more annually without a traditional four-year degree, often requiring relevant experience, certifications, or technical skills. High-paying roles in these areas typically involve advanced knowledge of industry tools, problem-solving abilities, and sometimes on-the-job training or vocational certifications.

What kind of jobs can you get in science?

In science, common jobs include research scientist, laboratory technician, data analyst, environmental scientist, and science educator. These roles often require strong analytical skills, knowledge of scientific methods, and relevant degrees or certifications, and they can be found in academia, government agencies, private industry, and healthcare settings.

What careers are there in science?

Careers in science include roles such as research scientist, laboratory technician, environmental scientist, and data analyst. These positions often require strong analytical skills, knowledge of scientific methods, and proficiency with tools like microscopes, laboratory equipment, or data software. Job description

Salary: 35-45/hr

THE MORGAN OLIVER SCHOOL

Welcome Allies, Activists, Organizers & Liberators.

Science Teacher Part-Time Approximately 16 hours/week Two to three days

Position Overview

The Morgan Oliver School is seeking a dedicated and passionate Science Teacher to bring science to life across our whole school from our youngest learners through our Liberators middle school cohort. The ideal candidate is comfortable adapting instruction for very different ages and genuinely enjoys collaboration. The anchor of this role is an extended STEM morning with our Liberators, co-planned with our Middle School Lead, so a love of problem-solving and building things together is essential.

This part-time position is approximately 16 hours per week over two to three days: roughly 7 hours of teaching across our four cohorts (K/1, 2/3, 4/5, and the Liberators), four hours of guaranteed weekly planning and collaboration time, and the remainder spent supporting the wider school day. The Liberators meet for a longer block than the lower grades.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging science lessons aligned with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) for our four cohorts: K/1, 2/3, 4/5, and our Liberators middle school group.
  • Lead an extended STEM morning with the Liberators, partnering closely with the Middle School Lead to develop curriculum, brainstorm ideas, and plan trips and hands-on experiences together.
  • Use The Morgan Oliver School's scope and sequence to design age-appropriate curriculum that supports scientific inquiry across every cohort.
  • Incorporate hands-on activities, experiments, and projects to foster a love for science and enhance learning outcomes.
  • Assess student progress and adjust instructional strategies to meet individual needs and learning styles.
  • Collaborate with other educators to integrate science across the curriculum and promote interdisciplinary learning.
  • Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports the social, emotional, and academic growth of all students.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for growth in science.
  • Support the wider school day alongside teaching including recess duty and other shared tasks as a present, contributing member of our small staff.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and school-wide initiatives as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Science Education, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • State teaching certification or licensure (preferred).
  • Proven experience teaching science to elementary and/or middle school students.
  • Knowledge of NGSS and experience with curriculum development and implementation.
  • Comfort with project-based, collaborative STEM work and a willingness to co-plan and problem-solve alongside colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with colleagues, parents, and students.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly rate of $4050, depending on experience.
  • Four hours of guaranteed, protected planning and collaboration time each week.
  • Professional development opportunities to support ongoing growth and learning.
  • Supportive and collaborative work environment within a progressive educational institution.
  • Materials and budget provided to enhance classroom instruction and student engagement.
