A Day in the Life of a Registered Nurse (RN)

As a PRN RN, you play a vital role in assessing and supporting patients during weekend on‑call hours. Your responsibilities include:

  • Conducting patient visits to assess nursing needs
  • Completing initial evaluation visits and developing individualized plans of care
  • Performing ongoing comprehensive assessments and revising plans as needed under physician direction
  • Providing skilled nursing treatments and educating patients and caregivers on disease processes, self‑care, and prevention
  • Initiating preventive and rehabilitative nursing procedures as ordered
  • Preparing clinical and progress notes and coordinating services with other care team members
  • Communicating directly with physicians and staff to ensure continuity of care
  • Re‑evaluating patient needs and assisting with discharge planning
  • Supervising LPNs, vocational nurses, and home health aides when appropriate
  • Practicing infection control and universal precautions
  • Reporting suspected abuse according to state and federal guidelines
  • Assisting with office tasks and new‑nurse orientation when needed

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing
