What are some common challenges faced by individuals working as Recovery Coaches, and how can these be managed?

Recovery Coaches often encounter challenges such as navigating emotional boundaries, supporting clients through relapse, and maintaining motivation in high-stress environments. It’s essential to practice self-care, seek regular supervision, and stay informed about best practices in addiction recovery. Building strong communication skills and collaborating with clinical teams can help Recovery Coaches provide consistent, effective support to those in recovery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Substance Abuse Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Substance Abuse Counselor, you generally need a background in psychology, social work, or counseling, often supported by licensure or certification. Familiarity with case management software, electronic health records, and evidence-based treatment programs is typically required. Exceptional active listening, empathy, and motivational skills help build trust and rapport with clients. These competencies are crucial for effectively supporting individuals in their recovery journey and promoting long-term behavioral change.

What does it mean to be 'in recovery'?

Being 'in recovery' typically refers to someone who is working to overcome addiction, mental health issues, or other life challenges. It means they are actively taking steps to improve their health and well-being, often through therapy, support groups, or medical treatment. Recovery is an ongoing process that involves making positive lifestyle changes, developing coping skills, and building a support network. People in recovery may still face setbacks, but they are committed to maintaining their progress and personal growth.

About Us:
CODA is Oregon's oldest nonprofit treatment provider specializing in evidence-based services for individuals with substance use disorders. At the Beaverton Recovery Center, we provide comprehensive residential treatment in a trauma-informed and recovery-oriented setting. Our Recovery Mentors are essential to helping patients bridge the gap between treatment and long-term wellness-offering hope, connection, and practical tools from someone who's walked the path themselves.
About the Role:
As a Recovery Mentor, you will walk alongside patients helping them access housing, benefits, and recovery support services while modeling positive recovery behavior. Through advocacy, mentoring, and peer-led support groups, you will help individuals build confidence, develop life skills, and strengthen ties to the recovery community. This is a highly relational role rooted in compassion, accountability, and trust.
What You'll Do:
  • Support patients in accessing essential community services including sober housing, food, healthcare, employment, and financial aid
  • Facilitate peer-led recovery and life skills groups
  • Accompany and transport patients to recovery-related appointments
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, reinforcing treatment goals and demonstrating recovery-oriented living
  • Assist patients in achieving personal recovery milestones and maintaining momentum after treatment
  • Document patient interactions in electronic health records
  • Engage in team meetings, case conferences, trainings, and recovery-focused events
  • Help build bridges between CODA and community partners in the recovery ecosystem
  • Promote community reintegration and progress in areas like education, housing, employment, and family stability

What You Will Bring:
  • Required: High school diploma or GED
  • Lived experience in recovery and a willingness to share your journey in service of others
  • Ability to build rapport, maintain boundaries, and offer nonjudgmental, trauma-informed support
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and group facilitation skills
  • Comfort working in diverse communities and with individuals in early stages of recovery
  • Ability to manage documentation and communication through Microsoft Office and electronic records systems
  • A valid Oregon or Washington driver's license

Required Certifications (or ability to obtain):
  • Peer Support Specialist (PSS) or Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) certification within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days
  • Crisis prevention training (e.g., CPI) within 90 days

What We Offer:
  • Meaningful Impact: Be a living example of hope and resilience
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and more
  • Supportive Team Culture: Join a mission-aligned team grounded in collaboration, compassion, courage, respect, and vision
  • Professional Growth: Expand your skills in recovery coaching, advocacy, and systems navigation within a supportive healthcare environment
