At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. Please visit our DOTD Career Center for more information about our agency.
Help ensure Louisiana's road and bridge projects are built safely, accurately, and in accordance with DOTD standards, specifications, and contract requirements. Construction Inspectors support DOTD Project Engineers and higher-level inspectors by performing field inspections, materials observation, and construction documentation on active roadway, bridge, and drainage projects.
No prior construction inspection experience is required - training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Construction Inspector job series.
This is an outdoor, physically active role that may involve traffic exposure, varying weather conditions, extended workdays, night work, or changing schedules based on construction needs.
Positions are located in Tangipahoa, St. Helena, St. Tammany, and Washington Parishes, District 62 and report to the Construction Inspector Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Depending on level and assignment, Construction Inspectors may:
  • Assist with inspection of roadway, bridge, drainage, and related construction activities;
  • Review and document material deliveries and quantities (including haul tickets and load tickets);
  • Perform measurements, field checks, and routine tests under supervision;
  • Observe contractor work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and special provisions;
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including field notes, diaries, test reports, and estimates;
  • Enter construction project data into required systems (e.g., SiteManager or other DOTD applications);
  • Participate in required training and structured certification programs;
  • Support public interaction and coordination during construction activities, as needed;
  • Assist with emergency or disaster response activities when required.

Position-Specific Details:
Compensation: Construction Inspector 1 - $14.98/ hourly plus $2/hourly premium pay for every hour worked. An additional $2/hourly Shift Differential Pay for Hours worked after 6pm & before 6am when working on Construction Projects Only.
Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.
Career Progression: Vacancies will be filled as Construction Inspector 1 only.
Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.
