Position Summary
Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) AmeriCorps Fellows serve in communities across Northern California to build volunteer infrastructure and strengthen community engagement within nonprofit and local government agencies (Host Sites). Fellows help create more connected and resilient neighborhoods by addressing social isolation, supporting climate action, and increasing disaster preparedness.
Fellows serve by:
  • Building sustainable systems to recruit, train, manage, and support volunteers and Neighborhood Leaders.
  • Engaging communities through outreach, neighborhood events, and awareness-building.
  • Supporting partnerships and fundraising efforts that strengthen volunteer programs and community initiatives.
This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in volunteer management, community engagement, program development, and nonprofit leadership while making a lasting impact. Throughout the service term, Fellows receive extensive training, professional development, and mentorship.
Essential AmeriCorps Duties
  • Design and implement Neighborhood Leader programs, volunteer roles, and community engagement strategies.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers, including high-value and skilled volunteers serving in leadership roles.

  • Create and maintain systems for tracking volunteer participation, hours, and program outcomes.
  • Establish volunteer policies, procedures, and sustainable infrastructure.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and local stakeholders.
  • Support marketing, coalition building, community outreach, advisory boards, neighborhood councils, and special events.
  • Serve alongside Neighborhood Leaders and volunteers to strengthen relationships and better understand community needs.
  • Track program progress using the AmeriCorps Member Service Plan.
  • Participate in all required AmeriCorps and N2N trainings, including California Days of Action and a minimum of two National Service Days.

Position Commitment
  • Full-time, 11-month commitment totaling 1,700 service hours.
  • Typical schedule is Monday-Friday, generally 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; some evenings and weekends are required depending on Host Site activities.
  • Service is primarily performed in person. Fellows are expected to live within a reasonable commuting distance of their Host Site.
  • Regular interaction with volunteers, community members, and partner organizations is expected.
  • All service activities must comply with AmeriCorps regulations and approved program activities.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Represent N2N professionally at recruitment events, trainings, meetings, and community activities.
  • Support additional community-building efforts at the Host Site.
  • Build positive working relationships with program and Host Site staff.
  • Submit monthly impact stories and volunteer data through the OnCorps reporting system.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and fulfill all service commitments.
  • Travel occasionally throughout Northern California for trainings and service activities.
  • Work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, leadership, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications
Applicants must:
  • Be at least 18 years old (17 with parental consent).
  • Have a high school diploma or GED by the start of service.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • Successfully complete required criminal history checks (TrueScreen, fingerprint-based DOJ/FBI background check).
  • Provide proof of a current tuberculosis (TB) test.
  • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements, including prior service limitations.
  • Be organized, dependable, flexible, and professional.
  • Demonstrate integrity and a commitment to service.
  • Follow all program safety policies and procedures.
  • Have an interest in community service, volunteer engagement, or nonprofit/public service.

Benefits
  • $3,000 monthly living stipend
  • Segal Education Award ($7,395) and California For All Education Award ($2,605) upon successful completion of service, which may be used for qualified educational expenses or eligible student loans.*
  • Student loan deferment and interest repayment.
  • Relocation stipend for Fellows moving from out of state and more than 250 miles from their Host Site.
  • Health benefits.
  • Childcare assistance (if eligible).
  • Potential eligibility for CalFresh (California's food assistance program).
  • Extensive professional development, training, and networking opportunities.
  • Meaningful experience that prepares Fellows for careers in nonprofit, government, and community leadership.
*Please note: Living stipends and education awards are taxable.
Program Overview
Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) is an AmeriCorps program that places Fellows at nonprofit and government agencies across Northern California to build sustainable community engagement initiatives. Each Fellow serves at one Host Site, working primarily behind the scenes to strengthen volunteer programs, develop Neighborhood Leader initiatives, and create systems that support long-term community engagement.
Fellows also engage directly with community members to build relationships, understand local needs, and support volunteer activities. N2N Fellows serve as part of a 20-member cohort, working in pairs at Host Sites throughout the region while participating in regular collaboration, professional development, and AmeriCorps training.
