Director of Underwriting

Location: Birmingham, AL

Work Schedule: Hybrid schedule with regular work onsite at the VIVA HEALTH corporate office and some work-from-home opportunities.   

Job Summary

The Director of Underwriting is responsible for the maintenance and development of all aspects of underwriting and actuarial analysis including product pricing, product development, group risk assessment, data analysis and reporting, regulatory reports and filing, and reinsurance reporting. This position is also responsible for management of the Underwriting Department staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for pricing and approval/decline of employee groups presented for quoting by Sales staff for Large and Small Group product lines.
  • Produce and refine monthly reports on underwriting activity for Senior Management and develop additional reporting projects, as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain pricing/rating models for Large and Small group product lines.
  • Prepare and submit underwriting regulatory filings.
  • Analyze and report healthcare costs for internal and external customer utilization.
  • Provide underwriting data and support to product development staff for pricing and improvement of new products.
  • Analyze, report, and accumulate reinsurance reimbursements. Assist Senior Management with all aspects of the Company's reinsurance contract.
  • Aid in the development and ongoing modification of benefits and plan designs to be coordinated with Sales & Marketing, Pharmacy, and other departments.
  • Oversee various aspects relating to Underwriting including but not limited to ensuring compliance with Federal Health Care Reform laws.
  • Manage the Underwriting Department staff.

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field
  • 7 years’ underwriting/actuarial experience
  • 3 years’ management experience
  • Advanced computer skills including Excel, pivot tables, and Access
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in cooperation and conjunction with many other departments within the Company
  • Ability to manage staff
  • Aptitude and interest in medical and financial risk analysis and assessment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to solve problems as they arise
  • Ability to work under pressure from deadlines and goals

PREFERRED:

  • Group or individual insurance underwriting experience
  • Medicare Advantage bid process experience
  • Operational experience interfacing with Federal and/or State web-based applications
