Job Description Summary
Character of Duties:
Conduct biodiversity assessments using DNA metabarcoding and eDNA approaches to support Guam NSF EPSCoR and Guam Center for Biodiversity Research (GCBR) objectives;
Design and implement integrated field sampling strategies (e.g., substrates, biofilms, ARMS, water) across multiple coral reef research sites in Guam;
Lead laboratory processing of metabarcoding samples, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, library preparation, and sequencing;
Develop and maintain bioinformatics workflows for quality control, taxonomic assignment, and biodiversity analysis;
Integrate molecular biodiversity data with survey, specimen, and/or environmental datasets;
Assist with curation and management of sequence data, metadata, and associated voucher specimens;
Lead or co-author peer-reviewed publications in biodiversity genomics and molecular ecology;
Collaborate with local and international taxonomic and genomics researchers;
Co-advise graduate students conducting research aligned with EPSCoR/GCBR biodiversity objectives;
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics or a closely related field from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent;
Demonstrated experience with DNA metabarcoding and/or environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches for biodiversity assessment;
Experience with marine field sampling in natural environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
Peer-reviewed publication record in molecular ecology, biodiversity genomics, or community ecology, with emphasis on metabarcoding or eDNA applications;
Experience designing and implementing biodiversity surveys using metabarcoding workflows (e.g., COI, 16S, 18S, ITS);
Proficiency in laboratory techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, library preparation, and sequencing (Illumina and/or Nanopore platforms);
Experience with bioinformatics pipelines for metabarcoding data (e.g., QIIME2, DADA2, OBITools, custom scripts);
Familiarity with reference databases, sequence curation, and taxonomic assignment;
Experience managing, analyzing, and archiving large molecular and ecological datasets;
Ability to coordinate field and laboratory teams and work collaboratively across disciplines;
SCUBA diving certified, ideally through a scientific diving governing body (e.g., AAUS);
Strong written and oral communication skills;

Work Eligibility:

Police and Court Clearance:
Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order No. 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment. Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence. Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.
Should an applicant be convicted of any crimes other than a minor traffic violation, all applicable information must be provided in the form of a police clearance report and court clearance report. Failure to admit any felony convictions may result in immediate disqualification or disciplinary action.
Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.
Upon selection of hire, you will be required to provide additional documents (if necessary) as condition of employment.
